I'm a lightweight compared to y'all. I had 15 gallons stored and went through about 25 before the lights came back on. But I was only running the fridge, two fans and tv/internet on a 3600W generator, refueling every 12 hours. I'll probably go ahead and get a few more cans anyway...

NONE, go get a natural gas carburetor, and you will never buy gas again! Tap into your gas line feeding your home...$200 and done.

Works beautiful....

probably going to convert my portable generator to propane. I had 30 gallons in cans, generator full and 20 gallons in my boat. burned through that in no time. At least with propane I can get a couple 25 gallon propane tanks and be good to go. (I didn't have a problem getting propane at all for my gas grill)

all that time and money converting to propane and tanks... just add 6 5 gallon cans more ($120 cost), that gives you now 80 gallons heading into a storm.

This is probably due to there being so many in the market. A Generac 22KW at my dad's ran for 10 days with household power consumption unchanged before power was restored with one stop for an oil change. Lots more anecdotal stories with the Generacs, both good and bad. Not surprising, as they have a ton of market share.

That said, I won't be storing any gas. Just going to get a Cummins RS20A. The Cummins and the Kohler seem to be the highest rated. But I don't think the Generac is bad.

This is true as well. I wish I would have been keeping track of my fuel consumption. I live next door to my dad and think we had like 10 cans total. Once we started adding fuel we just filling up both of them at the same time and we didn't bother separating our cans so I really do not know how much I burnt. It was out for six days total.

I've often wondered with those things, what happens to the gas flow if the engine stops?

Won't store anything. If we lose power, we will be long gone to our ranch 6 hours from the coast until power comes back on. That's what we do every time.

Do you empty out your freezers and fridge's before you leave?

I'm gonna stick with the 10-15 in cans plus 6 in the generator.

I left my house in BR every 18 hours or so to grab 10 more gallons of gas, and never was below 5 gallons in a can + 6 in the generator. And it never took me more than 45 minutes to leave my house, get gas, and get home.

While past history doesn't tell me what is guaranteed to happen in the future, I'm not going to store 30-50 gallons of gas in my garage for something that is unlikely to happen again for years.

Several hundred gallons at least. I'm not sure exactly how much, just depends how much I can siphon out of all my neighbors' boats.
