If society would truly collapse globally, the least of your worries would be from lack of food and having to consume animals. Human on human violence would rise faster than you could imagine. It's funny you mention "animals" because animal instinct and not human instinct would have to take over if you were to survive. One would have to severely dehumanize there self.

No clue but I know of a couple local herds of elk that would be gone in an instant.

Yep.
For society to truly “collapse”, it implies that there is some sort of disaster/war/plague that kills off a significant percentage of the population. This would reduce the demand for food, not increase it.
Anything short of a significant human die-off, and we would just reach a new societal equilibrium. I guess there are scenarios where a global financial crisis, war, etc. lead to some sort of anarchy - elimination of all regulations and subsequent pollution and deforestation would probably be a much bigger threat to the animals on earth than the lack of food supply.
In fact, it seems that we are much more likely to cause mass extinctions when civilization is thriving.

Pretty naive to think otherwise.
The average human has absolutely no idea how to live even a couple of days without modern “necessities”.
Hell not only would we not wipe out animals. Their numbers would start growing the second this societal collapse happens.

A fair amount of major cities are built around river networks so doubt dehydration really decimates population in 5 days. Places like manhattan import shitloads daily and that gonna be trouble though. The top 20% of competence and/or power of flyover country probably fair pretty well.

You guys do realize there was a time when there were far less people and large game species got wiped out? Old timers had to resort to eating small game because the deer population was gone. Its why game & fish was formed.
I have no idea how long it would take but in my rural area everyone hunts so I cant imagine it would take long.

very few if any city people understand how, much less could, hunt without weapons and even if they googled it they arent smart enough since animals are smarter then the average human.

If you look worldwide, the US is unique in our populations of wildlife. The less developed a country is, usually the worse off the wildlife are. Certainly some would survive, but wildlife conservation is a luxury of our modern society.
Assuming stable human populations, animal populations would plummet quickly. In a matter of months anything within 100 miles of a populated area would likely be dead as we pushed out looking for protein source. Wilderness areas would continue to harbor good populations though. Once the human population dropped significantly and we reverted to tribal/community life, the animal populations would likely stabilize.

there are only around 30 million deer in the united states. That's like 1 for every 15 people (didn't bother looking up the population of the US, just guessing it is 450 million). Wildlife wouldn't last very long if there were not other food sources. Livestock would be the first target for most since they are easier to kill.

It wouldn't take long for the deer to be gone. Night-hunting, hook snares, dogs, automatic guns. Within 6 months they would be hard to find. Within a year they would be gone.

most populations centers would die out due to lack animals in immediate vicinity - some sort of equilibrium would be reached.
