They have them just simply because they wanted them.

I cannot imagine any image I'd like to have permanently scarred into my skin.

The only acceptable explanation is a deeply meaningful memorial date/location or something like that.

But they are a rung above the idiots who puncture their faces with scrap metal. that has to be a sickness of some sort.

Tattoos have been around forever

That's not a mark of approval or popularity. There is a lot of shite that has been around a long time that is idiotic. Tattoos are one of them.

And tattoos are mostly a class thing. Especially if it's anything more than a small tattoo that some people get "just to have one." Anything extravagant is extremely rare in the upper-middle to upper class.

Of course there are always exceptions, but my children, nieces, nephews, etc., are at the age where they (and a lot of their friends) are getting married. So we go to a lot of weddings where recent college graduates are.

These are young professionals. And the almost complete lack of tattoos is shocking compared to what I see out among the unwashed masses. Even seeing someone with a small wrist or shoulder tattoo is rare, and virtually no one with sleeves or leg/chest tattoos. And I'm talking about hundreds of young people over the last few years.

So there is hope, people!

(and spare me the "I know a rich guy with a full sleeve" there are always exceptions.)

certain tattoos that make me laugh, like on scars and injuries, and cancer stuff. I can deal with that

for sure - there is a place for them after all - haven't seen one of those but I can appreciate the motive at least

Something worse will come along. Everyone will have giant piercings or cosmetic amputations. The world is going to hell in a hand basket.

I've never hired a person with a tattoo on their face or neck. Don't want to scare elderly patients.

I have an uncle who got a tattoo in the early 1950’s. It is a silhouette of a pin up girl. Suggestive, but not lewd or crude. Decades ago (in my mind) I named her Betty Grable.

For a long time, Betty looked pretty good, at least as far as tattoos go. Now, though, Betty resides on 89 year old skin that sags, has wrinkles, and has lost most of the bicep and tricep muscle tone “she” once had.

This is not to criticize my uncle or his long ago choice, but between maturing, the things he values and finds important now, and Betty’s appearance, I’m certain he would tell that young man to avoid any peer pressure or temptation to “get inked” if he could.

I don’t like them but that instagram hashtag thread had a pic of some trashy girl with an “eleven heart eleven” tat on her hip and that did it for me. Meaning “make a wish”. It’s cliche and trashy but she seemed fun.

Just look to Europe. We're a generation behind them. It was weird the first time I went there in college and saw adults older than my parents with faded arm sleeves working at the hotel I stayed at.

I have zero tattoos, but I also do not understand what inherently makes a tattoo unprofessional or worth covering up.

It is also definitely not always a sign that a person is in some way troubled or otherwise unreliable.

They were never cool They weren’t ever accepted either It’s more of a marker for trauma that was understood by society except back then it was sorry you went to jail or thank you for going to war Nowadays it’s “sorry your dad wasn’t around” or “wow you must be really mad at your parents for bringing you to church”

The rare Gaucho reply that’s nail-on-head and not a cleverly disguised troll job.
