How lenient are you with a company card?

I document all my shite to the letter. I’m constantly blown away how many people at my company get fired for a 30$ charge here or there, or dropping alcohol on a card when they are not supposed to. We don’t even have to document under 25$ charges but I do it anyway because frick getting fired for something I forget.

Answers will be highly dependent on the industry. Employees that are an expense will be more scrutinized versus employees that are considered assets.

I've accidentally done it before and paid it back. I have 2 silver Visa credit cards. Honest mistake and no issues at work. I'm just glad it wasn't a scrip club charge or something like that

We have clear policies on what we can charge. Booze is ok provided you're buying drinks for a customer . If someone got the can for $30, the company was looking for a reason to run that person off.
If you begin to embezzle money via illicit company credit card use, then yea, you're toast once you get caught.
To add, it also depends what division you work for with us. R&D? Expenses are scrutinized. Sales? Swipe , swipe, swipe.

I mean, companies have policies and controls around these for a reason, yet so many people think they can skirt around em with no or minimal repercussions...and call bullshite when the company's auditors catch em doing it

Each company has their own pretty defined limits on what you can use your card on, the people that do it either know better or were too dumb to have the job in the first place.

If you have an accidental expense, what kind of company doesn’t allow you to write a check back?
People getting fired for accidental charges? frick that. Your employer sucks.

My company allows $80/day with no alcohol. I stay within, usually way under, that limit

I decided when I began my career that my expense reports would never be questioned. I have documented every line of every report flawlessly since then. Also have hard copies at my house of every expense report that I have done for over 20 years.
A couple of years ago, our corporate accounting folks called to let me know that they were auditing some of my recent expense reports. They called back a couple of weeks later and complimented me on how well things were documented.

anyone who has been in sales with a company card knows all the tricks in the book

Best one I've seen at work: There was a kid that got a DUI and charges his bail. He paid it back Monday morning. Said his debit and credit didn't have that limit and he couldn't stay there. Paid it back the next day and didn't lose his job. He was a good worker that was an asset to the company.

I wish my company didn't allow credit cards because it makes the tips go way down. Its like i'm skating out there for nothing sometimes

SO got sick on a work trip and asked to be reimbursed like $10 for meds and airborne. She and her boss got into it because he believes she would've been sick anyway and should've been prepared.
No, sir, you sent her into the field, she got sick doing her job, you can reimburse her the goddamn $10 for her fricking meds.
When she travels with her colleagues, her expense reports are well under the amount compared to theirs. If only he knew how much money she truly saves her company.

At a previous company, we were contracted out to larger companies. Part of our contract allowed unlimited documented fuel purchases.
Our vehicles were rated for 30mpg and averaged 25 mpg across the fleet for the first month.
The team of auditors were stealing fuel and tracking their thefts PERFECTLY
We reviewed it in a meeting and recommended all vehicles average at least 26mpg.
Never brought it up again. All vehicles averaged within .5% of 26mpg.

What industry are you allowed to buy drinks for clients?

I was the same way until I landed a gig with GE. I had $75 a day when traveling and didn't need to submit receipts. Blew my mind. I do know of someone who said their son stole the company card(not GE) and racked up $1500 in bullshite. Was fired immediately. I couldn't help but laugh.
