In their same industries are so terrible at it?
UPDATE: So many baws here knee jerk jump to the conclusion that Chick-Fil-A must just pay substantially more than all the other fast food competitors but it's simply not the case. Their avg pay is very much in line with the industry.
Company Average Salary
Chick-fil-A $27,387 -
Burger King $26,543 -
Wendy's $26,046 -
Subway $25,489 -

Hire good people. Pay them above the average. Train them well.
Fire bad apples.
Fire bad apples.

Building a positive work culture and providing good customer service isn't the same as deciphering Tax Code. But it's tough to find young people that are hard working and courteous.

The Baton Rouge Costco employees must be transplants from Walmart bc they suck

Customer service is not the priority for some these days. Investment firms care about $$$.

Costco needs to figure out the Sam's club self checkout using the app because being in a line 20 people deep to check out fricking blows. They've hired less checkout people and installed more self checkout which creates the incredibly long lines. They are helpful throughout the store but checkout is a clusterfrick of epic proportions.

I've never had and issue and I go once a week.

Simple. Don’t get bought out by venture capitalists.

Training AND Expectations. Real leadership that follows through.
I remember Outback in the late 90's and early 2000's being the absolute best in terms of service for all the standard affordable chain restaurants. The training was top notch. You had to memorize the menu to get hired. Mandatory video training and 2 weeks of shadowing.
All it takes is creating a culture and following through. Anyone else can do it. The problem is, most companies are too big to fail and don't see the need to change as long as the shareholders are happy and the company is making money, why change?

My wife and I seem to be the only people that know this trick at our Sam's club. We just scan as we add to the cart and then checkout while in line to leave. We bypass the long lines all the time! I don't see many other's doing that.

The employees that walk around the clipboard and the ones that restock are rude. Why even work is a customer service job when you just want to run over people?
And don’t get me started about the tire center - there’s one employee who is very rude and lies.
Just want to say that I’ve been to the Costco in Lafayette and one in Florida and the employees have been very professional and kind.

I don't think that is true. I go in a lot and many of them know me by face and are friendly and say hello to me.

Pay a hair more to get better employees they can hold to a higher standard.

They pay better than other establishments so they attract a better employee. I am sure it hurts their bottom line but its a better product for all because of it.

I don't think that is true.
And one of the people with a clipboard going around checking things - she will run you over and get between the produce you’re trying to look at and you - it’s weird. If she has a basket she will run into you, or one of your kids.
And never ask someone who is restocking anything.

Given how popular each of these companies are, I would say it is a massive benefit to their bottom line.
If you want top of the line employees, you should pay top of the line wages and benefits. Costco and Chik fil a have figured that out.
If you want to pay at or near minimum wage, you’ll get at or near minimum employees.

This. I’ve never been to a chik fil a with bad customer service

Yeah I agree. In the long run it helps. I wish more places understood this.
