Because they wanted to figure it out.
Most big corporations don't GAF because their bean counters have figured out they can still turn so much profit without investing in it.

I am not a fan of COSTCO because I despise crowds and having to pay to be among one if I buy anything or not BUT if you look at the facilities in both Chick Fil A and COSTCO there is a notable difference....they are clean, for the most part, and well lit. It is a corporate culture that makes a difference.
I swear this is a true story. I walked into a McDonalds in Carlsbad, NM about 8 years ago and it was filthy. I had to piss so I went to the bathroom and it was as bad as any blue room I ever sat foot in. There was a family eating in the dining room and they had a kid about 2 slinging food everywhere. 4 years later some of the fries that kid tossed on the floor was still under the booth. I checked it several times. 4 years and they had not managed to sweep those fries up. Corporate culture makes a difference. At one point in that 4 years McDonald corporate threatened to end the owners franchise agreement over the condition of the facility. If they made any changes they weren't noticeable.

Costco needs to figure out the Sam's club self checkout using the app because being in a line 20 people deep to check out fricking blows. They've hired less checkout people and installed more self checkout which creates the incredibly long lines. They are helpful throughout the store but checkout is a clusterfrick of epic proportions.
I don't go to Costco often but every time I ever went it was indeed a cluster frick of epic proportions getting out of the damned place. My wife goes pretty often and she swears it is only that way when I am with her but I suspect my bitching about it makes it more noticeable....

Chik fil a is slipping in my opinion
We have 2 within 3 miles of the house in opposite directions. One is spot on every time and has been for years and years. The other is almost as bad as a fricking Krystal. And has been for years and years. Generally speaking though they are the gold standard. Whataburger is at some locations but it is hit or miss more so than CFA.

This. I’ve never been to a chik fil a with bad customer service
Horizon Parkway in Grovetown Georgia. For some reason they are almost as bad as a Krystal....they also do very little business compared to most CFAs and even compared to the other fast food places in the immediate area. It has been this way since they opened.

I've never had and issue and I go once a week.

My daughter and I go to Costco every other Saturday morning. We go get gas in the wifes car and then get into the store right after they open.
Both recent visits someone came to us as we waited in the short line and scanned most(or all) of our stuff so that the cashier just basically had to ring us up when we got there.

Because they run their business the way they want to, not how others want them to.

And not one employee recognizes me

Expectations are set and upheld but most importantly is culture. Is the fry cook’s manager a good role model. Is the GM a good role model.
It’s much like parenting. Show me a terrible kid and I’d bet you’d find either a bad parent or a nonexistent parent.

Popeyes is so delicious than even then the order is wrong, which it always is, its still great. if you order X, but you get Y, you still win. they screw up everything but the food

It’s also numbers.
CFA and In n Out have a lot more staff at any time than your local Jack in the box.
The same is true for QuikTrip vs 7-11.

UPDATE: So many baws here knee jerk jump to the conclusion that Chick-Fil-A must just pay substantially more than all the other fast food competitors but it's simply not the case. Their avg pay is very much in line with the industry.
Their part timers are earning what other place’s full timers are earning. They have teenagers working their first jobs at ones down here making at least $15/hour. Most are making pert near $20 or more.
The more you pay, the better labor you buy. If you have low pay, you get low quality labor. That’s how free markets work.
