I know this girl that constantly brags about how she was basically in her own her entire life (bc her parents let her) and how it awesome it was.

I hate helicopter parents but to me there's a degree of irresponsibility here on parents part.
4-5-6 year olds IMO need supervision.

In elementary school I would walk home by myself in the 3rd - 5th grade. I had older siblings at home, but they were never there after school. The idea of my daughter walking home alone in 3rd grade terrifies me.

didn't realize there was a term for it, but that's what I had to do when I was in elementary school. Still have all of my fingers, never burned the house down, and never got abducted, so I think it worked out well. Plus, I think it made me more independent and not such a scared little bitch.

Yeah, I forgot about that. For a year (3rd grade for me, 2nd for my brother) we lived only about 6 blocks from school so we would walk home after.

We were, but we had a nanny and the other service people to supervise. We'd typically just do homework before the 6:30PM viewing of the children where my siblings and I would go meet with our parents before having dinner in the kids dining room.

We always treasured those minutes with mother and father each evening.

I'm 2 for 3 out of those. Not too shabby.

I was a latch key kid. Do you want your kid to turn out like me? I didn't think so.

Kindergarten??? That's wayyyy too young. I could see maybe when you are like 9-10 though

Give em a key, cell phone and access to a pistol. Train them on the pistol and home defense. All good.

Had to call my mom at work when I got home to let her know I was there & if I was going out to play with friends or staying in. Had to do chores like the trash, put away the dishes, etc.

Same thing for me but i had to check in with my neighbor to let her know i was home. Started in second grade because my mom was a teacher at the school i went to K and first (we moved after those years)

Are people against this? Don't understand why. Granted, I grew up in a rural community with several family members living down my street

I prefer my kids not to be made out of latch keys, but to each his own I guess.

Had to google.

Weren't most kids like this? I could do whatever in the neighborhood and come and go as I pleased from 4th/5th onward. Would go to all my friends houses and ask them to go ride bikes or play football or something.

People aren't like that anymore?

Latch key means your parents weren't home when you got home from school. So you took care of yourself until they got home from work.

Yeah for the most part. It kinda boggles my mind that it isn't that way for everyone. Probably started towards the end of elementary school with an older sibling. The worst though is in middle school, I was in private school and had no way to get home. My mother worked at the school Asa counselor but she wouldn't leave till 6-7 PM. I'd be begging for rides. There were also very few kids nearby my house so it kinda sucked growing up around here. You

I was a latch key kid for maybe a week in 2nd grade (age 6). Was only about 45 minutes between getting off the bus & my mom coming home, and the neighbor lady next door was there if I needed help. About day 3, I decided to make dinner by putting rice in a pot and the pot in the microwave. Burned my fingers pretty badly. After that day, my mom found a woman across the street from the school to keep me til she got off work.

Did you call your mother when your Uncle Eugene came over to play lap hopper?

why did they wait so long? why not make you get a job in pre-k.

You put away dishes when you were 5? Where were the plates kept? On the floor?

I don't remember what age my mom let me stay home alone before she got home. It was fairly young, maybe 9 or 10. I can't stop laughing at 5 though.
