From kindergarten on, I was home by myself after getting off of the bus for 1-2 hours until my folks got home from work.
Lived in a good neighborhood with lots of kids my age & older, many also latch key kids.

Had to call my mom at work when I got home to let her know I was there & if I was going out to play with friends or staying in. Had to do chores like the trash, put away the dishes, etc.

Started watching my younger brother at 10 when he was 5 & in kindergarten. That just carried on.

All was good.

What about you guys?

Don't even know what that is.

eta:
After googling, I was apparently a latch key kid for some of my life. Who knew I was a part of an awesomely named group.

I was one.

Thanks goodness I was never snatched up by a pedo while walking home.

That was me too. We used to have daily football games in the street in front of our houses when we got home from school until our parents got home and made dinner

Me and my siblings were latch keyers. I'm sure where you live plays a large part in the smartness of it.

Yep. It wasn't really latch key. More of an hour of whiffle ball before mom got home. With other kid's moms around.

Never knew there was a term for that, but I was one pretty much from 5th grade on.

I was a latch key kid. I'd come home and knock out my chores in an hour (kitchen, living room, bathrooms) and be out the door until the street lights came on. It was glorious. CPS would take my kids if I let them do the same thing today.

Definitely did that from 6th grade on.

Plenty of similarly aged kids in the neighborhood, we'd all be out playing for a while before most parents got home.

I wasn't a latch key kid until Jr. High.

Kindergarten though? WTF?

Poor people problems. My mom didn't work growing up but we still had a nanny.

I was but not in kindergarten. That seems kind of young.
