Yeah it’s interesting because it is forcing people to leave but tbh they aren’t paying their fair share either

This is only happening in places where the Poors live. The OT old men are not the Poors. Pay attention, youngster.

I'm not sure what I hate more: property taxes or income taxes. Property taxes make you a serf to the state. Income taxes make you a slave to the state. Both are reprehensible. It's amazing we've allowed this to happen.

Remember that when the next new tax or tax increase shows up on the ballot. For the most part government is taking in more money via taxes than at any other point in US history, yet they seem to be doing less than ever with it.

frick em. I'm tapped out.

Yes.

If we pay anything at all.

Imagine what the Founding Fathers would think about property taxes

Why should I feel sorry for somebody who can sell the house that cost them $25k for $1M and move to the beach?

OT is bunch of old men but also believe in capitalism. Where do you stand?

I feel bad for the lower income.

For those that bought a house outstide of their means I do not feel bad at all. You should know that you have to pay property tax etc. I am not going to feel bad for you because your house rose in value and now your taxes are more. Thats your issue to deal with.

People need to plan better.

Or people like me who are planning my escape remote job abroad. I take care of my elderly father and want that relationship with my college age kids. After that, I don’t need the headache when I can cash out and live abroad all in for 2k a month. People everywhere are looking at options when America begins to feel like a malevolent grift.

Cull bloated government spending and institute a pure consumption tax.

The older I get (late 30’s) the more I’m coming around to the thinking that property taxes are inherently wrong. Property taxes, and the penalty for not paying them, essentially say that the state owns your property and you’re just renting it from them.

I think I’d rather have higher sale's taxes and elimination of property taxes

It’s not perfect, but it’s the best system ever invented in terms of rewarding ability and achievement.

Only acceptable answer for that group of folks, without question.

LOL, you must rent. I live in a place where they reassess every year. The abusive increase in appraised value is really unbelievable. I have to contest damn near every year. Mind you, these aren’t real appraisals. They do a drive by and pull a BS figure out of the air. Oh, and they never go down. Not even in 2008-2009.

Gentrification is just another boogie man people use as an excuse or example of the man keeping them down instead of taking responsibility for their own life choices.

Not always. Gentrification can improve a former slum, but in other cases, it can ruin an area. In the South, you have an issue with Yankees coming down here and buying up old properties in small towns, putting in an Organic Kale shop or some horseshite, and basically acting like they’re your new rulers. They’re especially vocal about removing monuments and names they don't like because their Yankee sensibilities are offended. We need to make running out carpetbaggers a thing again.

Yes, considering they already paid taxes on the money used to purchase it and then paid taxes on that purchase itself. Why should the government be allowed to continually tax a non-liquid investment that they don’t and never have owned?

I feel for that side of the coin, I really do.

I also completely appreciate the advantage of it where I live (The Woodlands). Our housing prices aren't absurdly high or anything compared to the surrounding area. However, people will try to buy just outside the area for several reasons, but one that always comes up is avoiding the property taxes. It keeps out those who don't value what makes our community desirable. In addition, the local taxes are used well, so it's easier to swallow.

Question is: if a bunch of high salaried people move to your town, is it your job to keep up or pack your bags?

Elimination of property taxes and shifting the burden to consumption/use taxes would eliminate this.
