There was one that looked homenade and had a bunch of what looked like college kids, so it can't be that hard.

Make friends with someone who rides in the parade or has a float.
Pay to be on said float.

This.
If it's a trashy float, you might find them looking for riders on Craigslist.

In addition to what has already been posted you can work for a company that sponsors one or belong to a social organization that sponsors one.

The parade organization has a facebook page... you could message them for some possible leads on krewe names/contact info.

Also, lots of floats are looking for walkers closer to the parade, so if you don't have any luck in the next year, that would be a good way to get in with some people (and save $).

Just climb aboard one that interests you as it passes by. The more the merrier.

Check Facebook around parade time. I had several people looking for riders for St. Patty's day.

Lots of floats end up looking for riders as the parade gets closer. If you don't know anyone you can contact the parade organizers thought the website to see if they can connect you with a float.

ST Pattys Day Parade

There are private and corporate floats. Ask around and see if anyone you know at work or friends are riding and ask them. Expect to pay at least $100 or more to ride plus the cost of throws for the parade.
