Not in the sense of 'how could anyone LIKE this stuff', but more so as to how one never hears of a thing, becomes aware of it, seeks it out or encounters it somehow, and decides - "Yes, I want to know more".

Whether it's music, movies, sports teams, anything. What drives one person to cheer for Pro Wrestling and another to be an ardent bird watcher or a gear head?

Do you like the things now that you've always liked? Or did your interests change over time?

Was thinking about this regarding TV and movies, but then realized it applies to so much more.

We just had a Super Bowl. As a kid, for no specific reason, I was a fan of the 70's Pittsburg Steelers. Not that I was from there, (I'm not) or that I knew anyone from there, but I found it was easier to cheer for them than say the Dallas Cowboys. No one around me taught or told me to cheer for this or that team. I just kinda 'decided'. Didn't hurt that they kept winning, but there are life long fans of other teams who have NEVER won.

My great-grandma watched the Braves, so I watched the Braves. My mom hated TV, and we only had 13 basic cable channels. In my small town, TBS was one of them, so I watched a lot of games.

My dad used to fall asleep in front of the saints losing on Sundays. That’s where my fandom started. Now I do the same. It’s the circle of life.

A mix of both. Some are consistent and some vary over time.

I tried for a long time to get into feet as a fetish because there is so much quality amateur content out there. It never really took off until recently. I'd say it's taken about 3 years of pretty regular work to get to a point where I'd feel comfortable talking with others of similar interest.

You have to be low iq to be a fan of something and devote time from your life for it

Everything is corporate slop now and only idiots consume it. Sometimes I wish I could get hit on the head and wake up 40 iq points dumber. I bet I’d like the saints and Taylor swift after

I dislike some music I liked decades ago, and I like a lot of music I disliked decades ago. Tastes change. I can’t say exactly when any of it happened.

My friends watched F1 and I generally wasn't interested in racing. I watched Drive to Survive at their request and fell in love with the sport. Still learning 4 years later.

Grew up a Braves fan because they were on TV locally and my dad/brother liked them.

Saints / LSU because Louisiana

Man City because frick Man U

As was I. Mainly due to the fact that Terry Bradshaw was from my hometown. And my aunt, uncle and cousins lived in Dallas and were rabid Cowboy fans. So I despised the Cowboys.

My most unnatural one is probably becoming a premier league fan, and specifically, Everton. The reality is that I watched a World Cup, really liked it, and didn't want to stop watching soccer. I watched some games, latched on to Everton, and went from there. I'm a casual supporter, it's not part of my identity, but it has been rewarding.

Honestly it took me a long time to even get my head around it. I didn't know anything about the region, the city, LFC, how the leagues worked, etc. Read some books about Liverpool the city, got back into the Beatles, wife and I have been to Liverpool and I know more than I should about what's going on in NW England. As I've gotten older I've found I really enjoy tackling broad subjects I don't know anything about and just casually exploring them over time, and this is one way to do that I guess. TBH, I could have done that with any team in Europe (and I probably should have picked a non-communist one), it proved to be a good gateway to learning about a lot of subjects while giving you a hook (ongoing team, matches, etc.) to keep the interest/investment current.

Whatever you do, don't become so much of a fan of something that you become an a-hole over it.

If you noticed it starting, then it's probably time to pick another hobby. It's funny how things that people become excited about can become intertwined with their identity.

You are more than that. It's okay to like something and not become a "fan."

Music is easiest for me, from liking whatever is popular to liking what speaks to you most lyrically. I liked garth as a kid because of his showmanship. Now i like riley green because all the lyrics are relatable. Helps growing up in the same town and having the same experiences i reckon.

Dopamine. I think as far as basic interests go, people are pretty much hardwired from birth, and I believe the Neubauer twin studies will prove it once it's released. Your personality, at its core, is a series of chemical reactions.

Interests can change over time under certain factors (largely education, socialization, and life experience) but the capacity for allowing these experiences to change your interests in certain things was always preprogrammed.

In 1972 my mom gave me a binder for school that had the Saints logo on it. I told her I didn't like the Saints because they were losers, she told me that they are New Orleans' team, and that makes them my team. I've been a fan ever since. You don't go against Mom.

Was a baseball fan from a young age and played the game as well.

Never have/will be a Cubs fan but day games at Wrigley Field was a staple on WGN-TV that we got on cable TV in the mid80s until i left for college.

And GO SOX!
