Probably something like that.

What was it's altitude at time of ejection?
No idea but obviously high enough to glide for 80 miles. Which leads back to my primary question - why would a pilot eject from a plane capable of going that far rather than spending that time trying to fix the problem or, I don’t know, maybe trying to land somewhere?

Maybe the pilot hit the wrong button?

I’m not saying it’s a conspiracy, just that the decision making by the pilot doesn’t seem all that great
What were the bad decisions?

What were the bad decisions
Ejecting from a plane capable of flying another 80 miles over a populated area and leaving it on autopilot to eventually crash in an unknown place endangering the lives of civilians on the ground?
Doing that over open ocean is one thing. Doing it over SC is another.

Only 1,000 feet.
It didn't just glide down, the autopilot flew the plane.

If the plane was unresponsive to him and behaving out of his control I would GTFO as well. It could immediately nose dive and make ejection impossible. frick that hunk of metal.

How does an F-35 travel 80 miles post-ejection?

who said the engines were off?

Who said the pilot initiated the ejection? The ejection system could have malfunctioned, or the pilot could have had a medical emergency that he/she felt was best handled by ejecting. One such emergency would be oxygen starvation given the fact that the F35 has issues with its oxygen delivery system.

See above,, you are assuming that the pilot initialized the ejection and that he/she was not in a medical emergency.

I think the f35 had an auto eject function. The pilot may not have ejected willingly.
We saw that ax few months ago with the f35 b where the pilot ejected from the ground. Or two feet above the ground.

Fair enough. Look forward to seeing the analysis. All I’m saying is that this doesn’t seem like a straightforward issue and we’re lucky a lot of civilians didn’t wind up dead.

They are thinking it may have been a problem with the auto-ejection function that this variant of the F-35 has. Which would explain why they are all grounded now.

If you've ever been to Kingstree SC, even the white people talk like that.
