What about those of us who don't care if god exists or not? Where do we fit? I have zero reason to believe a god does exist but even if I'm wrong, I wouldn't follow him anyway. I've read the bible, I even hand copied a good bit of it in after school dentition, and the guy that book is written about is an a-hole.
For me it's not about believing in the christian god. Whether or not he exists is irrelevant because the christian god is not an example I would follow.

But you are using God as your truth.
God, or gods, have always been a catchall way of explaining the unexplainable. It's a way for those who don't know or don't understand to explain how or why something occurs, without admitting that they don't know or understand.

It's not this simple. I do think God comes off very harsh, especially in the old testament, but there are reasons for that. The Bible doesn't stand alone, and no where on the Bible does it make the claim that it does. I find the Bible to be much more beautiful in the hands of the Catholic Church. And I find that if you are looking for examples to follow, read the lives of many incredible Saints of the Catholic Church. After all, those saints have one goal. Agree to disagree, but I think we should have reasons for everything we do, especially if we are holding a belief that disagrees with 95% of every man to ever live. If you are choosing to believe that the vast majority of mankind has been wrong, you best have some reasoning.
