Are they new and struggling or just lazy and struggling?

cover their shite for them and make sure management recognizes it

I get the manager fired and then coach up the employee or help them transfer to different position that makes them happy and that better suits them. Just did it last week.

4 years in. I’ve only been around under a year.

Then do what redneck said.

Help them. It’s the right thing to do.
Don’t worry about the recognition. It will come but not if you force it.

Going through this now. If they have a good attitude, try and help them understand what is expected from them, take the extra time. If not, it’s a little bit trickier. Assign them less and less work until it becomes obvious they are incompetent

It was different in commercial/industry setting....but holy shite, back working for govt and the only way to get rid of sorry arse civil servants is to PROMOTE them so they move out....maddening

I agree. It’s best for the company.

I strongly disagree. It’s in the best interests of the worker who is helping another to make sure that his efforts are recorded and validated. He could, after all, be directing that effort to his own output.
Never assume that good deeds will be noticed. We live in a negative culture where screw-ups and retards get attention and love, not the good guys. If you don’t want one who you’ve helped to become your boss, be sure it’s clear that you are responsible for his perceived success.

How do you deal with incompetent coworkers and peers?
I'm sure this is what co-workers say about me?

Do you have any sort of review/eval process where you have a chance to chat with your superior about YOUR performance?
If so, do what redneck said, and frame it as an expansion of your duties in a leadership capacity rather than sounding petty and bitter. Let them know you're doing more work and let them come to the conclusion that the coworker is doing less/crap work.

Distance them as far as you can from your work/responsibilities and let them sink themselves.

You need to read some personal development and leadership books.
Enjoy the fruits of that effort.

I generally help them out. That's what leaders do.

Management question:
If you put a gun to their head could they do the job?

I drink and do drugs. Also I’m often the incompetent one, but only because of the booze and drugs
