About $1000 every 2 weeks goes to “my community” via a wasteful tax system.

I maintain the disc golf courses. I'm so much better than you that you may as well not even exist.

I've been picking up roofing nails and tossing them in garbage cans on my neighborhood runs since the storm.

And I coach youth soccer.

volunteer a lot for church functions that are charity based and after hurricane laura my dad and I went and tarped roofs and helped as many as we could as he is a local elected official.

I also pay my taxes for the public schools and then send my kids to private school.

I feel good that I am doing my part.

There's a ton of shitposting on here, but honestly, I think that's because the question made quite a few people feel badly about themselves.

I actually had a similar experience early on during the pandemic.

I pulled up to the Essen/Jefferson intersection and saw a pandhandler. As a rule, I don't give to panhandlers, and especially not ones approaching vehicles. My thought process is that's a terrible way to handle charity, and that we should help people through organizations that specialize in that work.

Then the thought occurred to me that I didn't actually donate to any organizations that did that work. I donated to the arts, etc, but nothing that actually helped the people I was refusing to help, but using the existence of those organizations as my justification. That realization made me feel extremely uncomfortable, and like a massive hypocrite. So I sat down, did some research into local charity organizations, and significantly increased my total charitable contributions while also significantly rebalancing them. It's still a work in progress, but now that it's something I'm cognizant of, it's much easier for me to constantly examine whether my time and money are actually going to things I claim to want to see in the world, or whether I've simply begun making excuses for my inaction.

And I return my shopping cart so fastidiously you'd think I had a camera following me.

I cut the grass in the ditch on the vacant lot across the street from my house. I attend local high school football games and spend money at the concession stand

“I pay taxes” is how we ended up with a group of isolated taxpayers.

Get into your community and show people what hard work does for you. Or sit, make your money, and complain about things like a dolt.

Conservatives have “paid their taxes“ while Democrats have taken over the schools. Still feel like all you need to do is pay your taxes?
