What you can do in BR, is make sure you get on a team with parents who want to play tournaments but NOT travel, you can easily do that. If you are not chasing fictitious points or power rankings or fake world series, there are a ton of tournaments within 20-30 miles of BR, every weekend that you can play in and sleep in your bed every night.
You can do that anywhere. It's not all hired head coaches and traveling over the country. There's plenty of teams that only buy uniforms, the dads coach, and the only fees are directly into tournament fees. $400 split by 10-12 parents isn't bad. And the tourneys are typicall no more than an hour drive.

Here is how my situation turned out, my son played travelball since he was 11. He played all sports but was much more intune with baseball. We played for several different teams from Baton Rouge to Lafayette. If he wants to play past high school, unless your Bryce Harper it helps tremendously with exposure. At 15 we switched to perfect game. Every college and pro scout pay attention to these players because they are the best of the best. My son is now a junior in college and we have not payed a penny out of pocket for school. Baseball is a huge reason for that. He isn’t playing D1 but in baseball you do not have to play D1 to get good coaching and competition. Upside if he is decent he can get a lot of school paid for if that’s his thing. Down side I had a boat I used 2 times in 4 years, but as a family we enjoyed the time together. Good luck.

With all these Travel Sports I find something odd.
I never see kids outside playing! Like never. When I do I'm shocked.
Why can't they play outside or at the park?
We used to play basketball against grown men at the gym and parks growing up.

Explain it's travel ball or being financially irresponsible and saving shite for retirement. You'll just mooch off him in old age. He'll see the light.

We signed my step daughter up for fall softball. They practice every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday until the first game, which is Sunday September 9th, the opening weekend of NFL football. The odds I miss her first game are set at %100

I was dangerously close to a travel team but things luckily changed. For starters, one of the moms on our 6U team mentioned her 11 year old's team at Cypress Mounds was raising their price to $3K per kid! I literally freaked out when I heard it. It was during one of our games and I kind of loudly voiced my opposition to this whole "machine". I was like "What?! Are you fricking kidding me?!"
Clearly my resistance was noted, as a good many of the kids on our team had older siblings who were already wrapped up in this bullshite.
When it came time for the tryouts for 7U in August. Yes.. Spring tryouts for the team that wouldn't be starting play UNTIL the following March... We just happened to be on an already scheduled family beach trip.

the best thing to do is fine a team and coach that are not in it to make money. Yes, it’s likely someone’s dad, but all dads are not created equally.
The stated and followed goal should be to teach the kids the game, not win some costume jewelry rings. There are plenty of local “travel” teams that practice once a week and play in one tournament a month. Make sure the tournament is like 30 minutes or less away. They are everywhere so this shouldn’t be hard.
What generally happens is the crazy travel parents that are made fun of here will take their kids off the team because it loses too much and chase one of the “elite” teams trying for a spot. You are then left with a team nearly full of reasonable parents. Stick with a group like that when you find them. The benefit of travel is playing experience. Keep a close watch on arms

Buy a boat and get them fishing instead.
This!!
My kid played travel ball from 8-12.... went as far as NY to play. I told him the day he gives up travel ball I'm going buy a boat. He didn't play this year and I went buy a boat. It's a real nice time being in the boat with him. I have him hooked on fishing now so hopefully he doesn't have money later on to buy drugs!

when you figure you're shelling out $4000+ a year for the next 8 or 9 years...it just doesn't make sense.
Hope you don’t have daughters who want to take dancing, especially if they want to seriously pursue ballet. You’ll long for the 4000+ days.

Put a golf club in his hand instead of a baseball bat. He can play golf for damn near all of his life, unlike baseball.

How many of the other kids that played with your son got full rides in college?

I hate to break it to all you travel ball haters, but if your kid plays rec ball and makes all stars, you play all frickin summer, just like travel.
And if you don’t want to do it, just tell him no. And tell SO to get in kitchen and shut up. Unless you’re a chick, in which case get in the kitchen and shut up.

This topic has been discussed many times....
If your kid plans on playing high school baseball and wants to compete, unless he's talented, he will need the competition and skill level travel ball provides(providing he's well coached/good program).
Rec ball doesn't provide enough reps or level of competition.
That being said, it really needs to be weighed out with what kid wants plus your knowledge of him...

Don’t do it. Problem solved. Your 8 year old shouldn’t be running your house.
