Tell him no? If you don’t want to do it, don’t. That’s pretty much all there is to it.

But I would’ve hated it if I had to play every weekend year round.

I’m sure anyone would.

Who plays every weekend year round?

Just suck it up and let the kid play If he's good enough. If he sucks don't waste the money.

Someone asked me at tee ball if I wanted my kids to play on a tournament team. I fricking laughed out loud and started making jokes.

Then I realized he was fricking serious. Kinda felt bad but it's TEE BALL!!

Sat behind three dudes in coaches garb at a fast food joint, they were talking about their players and which ones they wanted to keep in particular positions and other strategies, what the team would be like in another year, it was serious as death I thought they were from a local high school, then a mom with a couple of the kids in the same uniform colors came in and I realized they were talking about 6 year olds.

All travel ball is, is another name for a separate league for baseball. You can easily be part of a local team that never “travels” and stays and plays in local weekend torunamets and only plays 2 or 3 weekends a month from February to June. There are so many different style of teams. The term “travel” is defined differently depending who you are with. The rec league can be just as bad. You play all summer and if your kid makes All-Stars then you play almost through August. Travel Ball is only as bad as you make it. Don’t sign up with a team that’s beyond what you are interested in and you will be fine. We did it for 5 years and the tournaments we played in where damn near all within 40-50 miles of my house. We played 2-3 weekends a month and we never missed a Summer vacation because our team stopped playing end of June and there were multiple teams who ran the same type of schedule. Just do some research on what your signing up for even if you stay in local recreation league. Baseball can be miserable if you don’t manage what you are signing up for.

This in general is the dumbest subject that is discussed here 35 times a years.

Talk with your friends and do research. Do what’s right for you

Funny to hear all the baws say “just say no.”

If your kid is going to play baseball past the age of 11, he will play travel ball. If he’s really good, he probably should play before that. It sucks, and there’s nothing wrong with the OP trying to find a way around it.

It’s not as simple as saying NO. In many cases, that means you will not play baseball in middle school/high school.

I don’t always like going to rec games with my three boys. But if I told them NO rec league, that doesn’t make me a badass man of the house. That makes me a selfish dick. And if I let them play the sport they like, that doesn’t mean my kids run the show.

No, I knew about how good the kid was for a couple of years before the kid's dad got the truck. It wasn't a new truck, but it was one the dad needed. My co-worker coached his son's team for years before they played select, and this kid was on it. My co-worker was also a friend. He sat next to me at work, and he was on the phone talking to the people that ran the select team, and parents a lot while he was at work. Losing the kid was a really big deal. I thought it sounded crazy for a kid that wasn't in high school, but I also thought my friend being on the phone all day talking about getting kids for the team, was crazy too.

I wouldn't do it even if the money were easily within my budget. The time is better spent on a wide range of activities. Learn all the math. Learn Mandarin or Gujarati.
Do tai chi. Pranayama. Guitar.
All that instead of travel.
Can play park rec league.

I'd teach him tennis early.
I'd consider what he's actually good at. Music a requirement.

If he is willing to sacrifice some other things then I say let him play. Childhood is short. If he loves it enough to give up something else that is a good life lesson for him

We signed my step daughter up for fall softball. They practice every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday until the first game, which is Sunday September 9th, the opening weekend of NFL football. The odds I miss her first game are set at %100

My coworker's daughter has been playing travel softball since she was 9 years old. Going into her senior year she's maxed out her potential as a very good HS player, but not quite good enough for a scholarship. With what he has spent on this over the last 8 years he could have saved enough to pay her full tuition at an elite private college.

Tell your kid to join the local little league, which is free. If he's good enough, he'll be selected to the leagues all star team. Then, the best players will travel all over the district, and region, competing at a high level. The cream will rise to the top,and when/if you get eliminated, you start getting ready for football. Pretty simple, and youre saved the embarrasment of being a 40 something year old man wearing a flat billed cap without having a major record deal.
