How do old people get so disconnected with the world around them?

Serious question. It's amazing to me that once people reach a certain age, it's as if they are oblivious to much of the world around them, even if they're still pretty active and get out of the house.

How in the world can someone not know what Amazon, Uber, Netflix, etc. are? Is it that the current crop of old folks had technology pass them by so quickly that many of them simply chose not to learn too much about it? I understand not knowing exactly how these companies/technologies work, but to have never even heard of them or know what they do is wild.

For reference, I'm mainly talking about 75+.

They don't care enough to learn new things.

My dad is 68 and still has a flip phone and doesn't own a TV

He only got the flip phone because he traveled for work the last 7-8 years of his career and it became a necessity

My grandparents are 70-80. Both sets didn't have electricity in their childhoods as they are from the serious country. My mom's parents didn't go to college and my dad's dad went on a GI bill. His mom (my grandmother) is the only one that had really any education growing up. When you walked to school and broke horses after I can see how today's world is a lot different.

When you can't see, hear, remember or think clearly, it happens.

And when you soil your drawers, you'll find that you have other things more important to worry about.

What you mentioned are all luxuries, not necessities. These are the people that will look you in the eye, shake your hand and have it mean something.

They aren't worried about what goes on inside a six inch screen or what is streaming online.

Probably because they're accustomed to reality and not the faux, cyber world. Connected to humanity > connected to the new and shiny.

Powerful...

You creating this thread is much more perplexing than a 75+ year old not subscribing to Netflix

They don't need the services. I see it happening to me. I don't use Facebook, snapchat, twitter and the like. Absolutely do not care. I've never Ubered, I drive where I want.

I mean, it’s pretty understandable that people age 75+ don’t really understand current technology. Technology starting in about mid 80s to now has accelerated at an insane rate

When you get old you will be the same way. You won't be able to keep up with new technology. That is if the world doesn't blow up before then

Maybe it's you who is out of touch with what is actually important in life. They are wise...put down the friggin' electronics, learn to live in the moment, and pay attention.

Some people, including myself, don’t have Facebook, Instagram, or twitter so they don’t hear the social justice complaints of 15% of the population so typically go oblivious about their day in a pleasant, happy mindset glad to be alive while those that live ‘connected’ stay miserable thinking the world is going in the shitter.

I'm not really old. I'm a man, I'm 40 but Uber is awesome

I grew up in metro BR with limited cab service so we just went out and drove home drunk. Now me and the wife can go to dinner and have 2 bottles of wine and it costs me $25-30 round trip with no DUI risk or waiting on a cab.
