Depends on the septu/octogenarian. I have both types in my family, the kind that DGAF and those that stay active and are engaged

For a lot of older folks, they are reaching the age when things are starting to fail on their bodies, the eyesight is failing, they don't hear like they used to ( my grandfather thought this could be a plus) their lives revolve around the next doctor's appointment and their back and legs don't work all that well. They are very insular because of it. I find that a lot of them are somewhat depressed

No work

No school

No grandkids.

That'll do it

To be fair, the first 50 years of my Dad's life went from the horse-and-buggy as the primary mode of transportation in rural America to the atomic bomb and putting a man on the moon. There were also tremendous advancements in electronics technology during World War 2.

The answer is simple - I stopped GAF.
I simply don't care.
It is a luxury and quite liberating.

My FIL enjoys reading. Not much a TV person. He likes to play with his ZTR and 4 wheeler. He's active and 77.
He owned chicken houses for decades and it helped keep him in pretty good shape.
He hated them though.

Well, you've come to the right place. This board is 80% old people who are disconnected with the world.

Define "the world around them".

I have never know what exactly that means. Does it mean local, state, country, or globe?

Old people get set in their ways and changing their routine is much more difficult and stressful.

Like many others have said, they just stopped giving a shite.

Picture seems staged and not reality

You want reality?

This is what the old lady would be doing

I guess the biggest takeaway from this thread is the OP thinks being able to use certain tech functions means connected to the world. That may be backward

I saw a married couple meet for lunch one day. They sat down at the table and each one was on their damn phones surfing and texting. They did not look at each other or talk to each other the whole time they were there. What kind of shite is that?

You see people at sports events. They paid to go, drove there, and sit in their seats staring at their phones and don't watch any of the game. ???

They cannot speak to people in person or look someone in the eye. But they can post on Facebook what they ate for breakfast, or what color turd their dog shite out that day. Who gives a shite about that?
