Might be correct. He went on the second wave at Iwo Jima, fought in Korea, and a lot in Vietnam. Stayed a marine till he died from cancer, prob from agent orange in Vietnam. He deserved a break, picking up trash would have been a break.

Military commands are organizational levels ... Thread should read as military ranks !!

I placed a Lieutenant Col under arrest while I was an E-3 and I wasn't an MP.

ETA: That same Colonel gave me a medal for arresting him.

So from what I gather from this thread is that its not as easy as saying "he outranks him, so he can order him to do whatever", its much more of a situational type thing most of the time. That correct?

Yeah, in the submarine navy most guys get to the ship at the E-3 or E-4 level. You don't see E-4's telling anyone what to do. But you better do whatever you're told by someone at the E-6 level or above.

Young officers (O1 and O2) typically only issue orders to senior enlisteds when they are standing watch as OOD, DO, or RDO.

Sobel gets a bad rap, I think he did a good job of preparing them for combat, honestly. Other than his own mistakes in tactical judgement, he trained the hell out of those men.

if say a corporal can order a private around

A corporal is a non-commissioned officer so they can definitely order privates around. In the infantry a corporal is generally a fire team leader so they would give orders to the people below them in the team.

It's not suicide for a O-1 to give orders to a high ranking NCO, it happens all the time. A platoon sgt is usually an E-7 and can have 15yrs of experience. A platoon leader straight out of officer basic will still be giving him orders. The issue is ignoring the advice of the NCOs.

Why? Doesn't Warrant Officer pay top out at O-3 level?

Went in the Army as Vietnam war was winding down...Warrant Officers were not arrogant assholes like most 2nd Louies and other Commissioned Officers. Every one of them that I had the honor of meeting was top of the line and treated the lowest of privates as a human being. And they put their asses on the line flying troops in and out of hot LZ's and Medivacs!

Depends on your billet, you can be an E-3 in the Marine Corps and hold an E-4's billet due to experience or lack of numbers. You best believe that E-3 is giving orders and the gentleman below (sometimes even lower rank (E-4) listen and do what they're told

They most certainly are in the infantry, especially if that LCpl has deployed and the PFC/Pvt haven't. I'm talking parade rest and greeting of the day too.

shite, a Lance Coolie with a deployment and/or a CAR on his shirt is fricking with a corporal that doesn’t have a CAR or a deployment. At least in a line unit.

Especially if it's a Cpl or Sgt who just dropped in from security forces. I always felt sorry for those guys.
