How difficult or demanding is your job?

Nearly everyone at my department and I are at a near constant pace. You absolutely never get ahead. If you aren’t constantly droning away at your computer, you will get further and further behind. We are swamped from the second we enter the building until the minute we leave. Everyone is miserable and negative. Nobody ever has anything good to say everyone is stressed the hell out. Our department higher-ups regularly admit that we are overworked and underpaid but nothing ever changes from a policy standpoint due to budget.
We are also constantly putting out large fires and letting the small ones sit to the side until they become big enough fires. I’d love to put out the small fires but there’s never time to address them. There’s no work-life balance. I am constantly behind no matter how much OT I put in. I also make sub 50k a year so there’s that... also, no paid overtime but we are asked to work it.
Is this normal? Is everyone’s job like this? I was in the military for 8 years prior to college so this is my first real civilian employment but my experience has been absolutely terrible. Should I do some looking around? I’ve stuck it out for 2 years, which is what I planned on staying for when I accepted the position.

Some weeks there is not enough time in the day to get everything done and some weeks I have nothing to do. I’m overall is probably a 4/10 on the stress scale and a 7.5/10 on the busy scale.

Get a high level management or director position. You’ll work about 10 hours/week.

If I may ask, what industry are you in? Are you in a management role?
Posted on 12/9/19 at 5:32 pm to Boaty_McBoatface
Damn, we must work in the same industry.
But for real, sometimes my job is butter, and sometimes it is as you describe. The annoying part is that most of the problems are due to people I work with being total dumbasses, so it can get frustrating.
I can openly bitch to my boss though and it's no big deal, and he's at least somewhat receptive, so that's nice. But I never bitch about something that doesn't truly need to be addressed.

Wait weren’t you the guy wanting to work through your first year of law school?
Posted on 12/9/19 at 5:33 pm to AbuTheMonkey
You can ask. I work for the state. I work in corrections.

Very overwhelming at first but now I got the hang of it and it's pretty easy, great benefits, got a couple awards and a steady backlog of work.

I hope not if he's making under 50k.
