A friend just got the shaft from Shell (engineer) after 29 years. One year short of his pension and now he gets nothing but a severance package. Can't imagine how much that sucks.

A lot of places will not hire a male over 50, particularly one who is educated. First, they have to pay us more for our experience. Second, they're rather hire the cheaper kid who will take orders without question. If this guy has any decent background, look at consulting or perhaps being a safety consultant.

He's not getting hired because he worked at a joke of an engineering firm. Jacobs is basically a saftey coordinator and intermediary between the owner and GC. They have done zero engineering work for as long as I've had to deal with them and that's going on 12 years. They are tied in with the New Orleans school board.

If he was there for that long he's getting a pension payment. They have a formula for years of service, 80-point system, age, etc. It's probably tied up in his severance package. He's not getting something if he was in fact a shell employee for that long.

With that negative attitude he isn't going to sell shite. Including himself in a job interview.
