I don't understand this at all. It's not like young guys make a lifetime career out of one job these days. I would think that an older guy is less likely to be always shopping his services than a young guy.

Tell him "Just for Men" isn't just an accurate description of his a-hole.

Move up here
If he wants to work at an engineering firm, he will have people falling all over themselves to offer him $90-100k
Eta: not kidding. Huge dearth of experienced engineers here. They don't like to hire young people either

Looking at the Linkedin profile right now of someone who's been out of work six months. The picture shows a jowly middle aged guy, and the resume touts "35 years experience" in his field. Clearly those aren't characteristics that excite hiring managers.

If he was there for that long he's getting a pension payment. They have a formula for years of service, 80-point system, age, etc. It's probably tied up in his severance package. He's not getting something if he was in fact a shell employee for that long.
That's exactly what I thought. Not so, according to his wife.

Grey hair shouts "I am older and expect a lot of money"!
Younger people expect a lower salary and will hustle to earn it and prove themselves.
A recent article said to not mention "35 years of experience". Just concentrate on the last 10 years since that is what is relevant to prospective employers.
Your friend is marketing himself wrong. He should have done better research about job hunting.
P.S. Also, older engineers probably don't have training in the latest techniques/processes. Update his skills and highlight recent training courses on any resume/job application.

My company doesn't really hire old guys, unless they're from India and are expert software engineers. These dudes usually have a MS in comp sci or a Ph.D.
Too much age discrimination to worry about, and the demand for higher salaries. This immediately puts a resume of someone over 45 in the trash.

One year short of his pension
I was informed that this happens ALOT to senior staff employees. Sadly, it happens more often than people are willing to admit. Its a means to get the best shelf life from employees but reduce the cost of letting them go.
Terrible

Things are tough right now for sure. The older engineers I know who have quit/been let go have found new work pretty easily. There isn't a ton of work right now, things seem to be getting pretty lean. But if he has a good reputation, he will likely find something sooner than later.

Not an engineer but I was a party chief for twelve years. Nobody will hire an old dinosaur like me. I was recently laid off from my warehouse manager job and I've taken a job for a contractor in a plant. It's brutal bot I'm easily making three times what I was so I'll just have to get used to it.

It has nothing to do with the color of hair and everything to do with age and performance
