How difficult is it for a grey haired man to get a job in a new field?

One of my buddies that i go to church with was laid off(fired) with Jacobs Engineering. He was with them for 8 years and got the cut. Nobody is hiring grey haired engineers is what he told me.
He's not sure what to do. Maybe a car salesman?
