No AC in the schools in Lafayette till I got to college. Went to Camp in Pineville for the Summers, no AC in the old military barracks they used for our housing.

When we were in elementary school we weren’t allowed to wear t-shirts. But if you had a t under your school shirt on a really hot day, they’d let you lose the outer shirt.

You don't miss what you never had.
I grew up in Franklin Parrish in the 50s. Almost everyone who lived outside the city had no air conditioners, running water, nor indoor plumbing.

One of my most vivid memories of middle school was the day in 5th grade when window AC units were installed in all the class rooms at Clinton Middle School. Prior to that we would just sweat for a hour or so after lunch recess. It felt like such a treat when we got air-conditioning and the teachers would keep the AC on full blast too.

That is a damn lie. I remember in the 50s and 60s (I'm that old) that the summer time temps over 100 was something that was not common but occurred now and then. Now if its 95 the wimps are complaining.

You get used to it.

I guess if you never had it you don’t know what you are missing- I grew up with window units. And a large attic fan thing that would pull warmer air out of the house and send it into the attic.
It wasn’t until the fifth grade that we had central air/heat.

My grandparents didn’t have a/c until my Dad bought a window unit for them, they only used it when we came to visit. Before that my brother and I would spend a week with them in the summer. Windows open, fans on I loved listening to the sounds of the night.

We had a SERIOUS house fan that sucked in air and blew into the attic. I was like an airplane motor. Around 5 or so we never used it any longer. Got AC's installed. I was scared that attic fan would lift me up when I walked in the hall.

Times were different for sure. Houses were built differently. Higher ceilings helped. We never had a/c so life was normal being hot. We weren't as wimpy as those that came behind us. I was out of the military before I had a house with a/c.

My parent’s home was built in 1902. The entire thing was designed to move air via prevailing winds. Large front porch, 12’ ceilings, floor to ceiling windows in front, windows on the side line up with doors and other windows to move air through, transoms can be opened, ice room in rear, etc.

I stayed down in the carribbevn in June for a week without A/C.

I just had ceiling fans at night.
The first 2 nights were tough but you get used to it.

I recall having to adjust to the A/C when I got home.

wierd.

Grew up in New Orleans with an attic fan but can remember when we didn't have one. Now living in the woods in Florida in an old ranch style house with central AC and heat but not when we first moved in so I bought a fancy attic fan that is variable speed and on a timer so it wood kick off late at night when it got cool. Still have that fan. I stretched a 50% shade cloth over my pool and it keeps the water around 86-88 degrees which is nice and cool when you're hot and sweaty. Otherwise the water would be HOT at around 90-92 degrees. Never had AC in school period, until college. It's hotter than it used to be...

My grandpa didn't have ac when I was a kid. Well, he had it, but refused to turn it on. His house was always a humid pit and I hated going over there.

Built an off grid cabin back in MS and the first couple years I did without it. Cold showers and a good fan were all I needed.
