We had a attic fan, that was back when people could sleep with the windows open.I also had a great uncle that had to pay more to special order a truck without ac.

Great big window fans in open windows helped at night. I don't recall being bothered by it during the day, but I was a kid. We didn't have an air conditioned home until I was in fourth grade. So luxurious!

Houses were built differently. It’s the reason why old houses have low thresholds and lots of windows to allow for airflow. You’d be surprised.
Try adding AC to an old house and see what your electric bill is. You’d be shocked how well they reject heat.

Family camp in Mississippi still has the screened in Sleeping Porch by the lake.

My brother in law told me he grew up in breaux bridge without ac and said that’s all they knew and sat on the front porch. I just can’t fathom that.

This.

We had a big window fan in the rear of the house that pulled air through the house. I grew up in a house that was built in the late 1940’s and it had those classic high ceilings that you see in old southern houses.

We didn't have AC in school. I remember it being hot as hell and always sweating. Everybody smelled like wet dogs.

Tough times make tough people
Country today is full of a bunch of pussies.
With that said my ac is currently on 68
Little chilly , might bump it to 70

Honest, I'm surprised more people in this thread didn't have access to AC, and definitely central AC, especially people who grew up in the country. Admittedly my folks were poor growing up, but I'm guessing it was at least the early-mid 80s when everyone starting putting central AC in houses.
I still have relatives in living in the country who don't have central AC. However, the technology, cost, and effectiveness of window units has definitely made it easier on people.

ceiling and attic fans, windows open. We were comfortable. Along comes air conditioning and now people can't handle 80 degree temps anymore.

When I was in Army basic training in the early 80’s, there wasn’t any ac in the barracks, just big stand up fans.

Window fans, oscillating fans, snowballs and sweat.

Wasn't as hot back then as it is now. Global warming is a real thing regardless if people want to believe it or not. Didn't have as much emission in the air effecting the climate, atmosphere, and natural way of things as we do now.

Didn't have air conditioning until i was in high school. Had windows and attic fans. We managed to survive.

I mentioned I was reared in Northeast Louisiana with no air conditioner. I live in East Tn. now. Its predicted 96 degrees here today with high humidity. It was 78 degrees at 8:00 AM, 93 degrees at noon. When I walked outside, I was reminded of this topic because the air had the feel of the atmosphere so typical of summers in Louisiana.

Weather like this never bothered me when I was kid I'd stay outside all day. It was the cold that bothered me, of course I was a very skinny kid.
Yep. Never bothered me as a kid. I really don't complain about it now.

Yard and garden chores first thing in the morning. Lunch cooked in the morning as the main meal of the day.
Clothes drying on the line faster than a clothes dryer.
Sitting porch facing east or north, if sun hits an end of it, morning glory vines growing up to provide total shade for that corner.
Cotton clothes.
Afternoon naps, some taken while listening to baseball games.
Light evening meal.
Screened in sleeping porches. Ceiling fans. Iced tea. Make your own ice cream.
Watching heat lightening at night off in the distance.
Let the dog sleep under the front porch.
Cooking in the 2nd kitchen, the one down in the basement for canning for winter and spring.
Houses designed with cross ventilation and in summer sleep with your head at the bottom of the bed. And your feet where your head would be.
Trees around the house. (Yesterday we were in Knoxville; outside temp was 93, drove home pulled into our backyard with big old trees 82F)

we would run around in the heat all day long and come inside to windows and attic fans and didn't bother us at all.
