They were definitely still pretty miserable on really hot days, but they didn't know what an AC cooled house felt like.
Movie theaters used the fact they were air-conditioned in their ads.

The heat doens't bother you as much when you are young. Weather like this never bothered me when I was kid I'd stay outside all day. It was the cold that bothered me, of course I was a very skinny kid.

It’s not so bad if you can wear bum clothes and do work. You are prepared for it. Sweating in gym clothes is normal but sweating in business casual is miserable.

This definitely requires its own thread. Definitely could not have been part of the one you made 30 minutes before this one. Definitely not.

Wife (no pics) and I were looking at houses a couple years ago and we ran across a completely remodeled ranch that kept the attic fan for some reason. She was born and raised in Seattle so had no idea what it was or what it was used for. She just looked at me and asked "why does this house have a giant fan that blows in to the attic?!?"

My parents bought and remodeled their house a few years ago and it has one.

Attic fans will freeze you out at night if you have a bed next to a cracked window!

If I ever build a house I'm going old school: attic fan, crawl space, high ceilings, screened dogtrot. Add spray foam insulation to cap it off.

Baghdad really knows how to do it; masonry walls that are a foot thick. Outside temperature would be 120 degrees and the inside would be 80-85.

That's the thing about Louisiana though. We get miserable heat but no miserable cold.

My brother in law told me he grew up in breaux bridge without ac and said that’s all they knew and sat on the front porch. I just can’t fathom that.

I did and back then we had a big attic fan that would pull air thru open doors amd windows. Let me tell you it would make you reach for the covers about 10 o'clock at night pulling in that night air even in the dead of summer.

Attic fan at home
In school you had to be careful not to rest you hand on the paper when taking test because your sweat would smear the previous answers or drip off your head onto the paper

And the T building (temporary building that actually were there for as long as I was)
Were a tin sweat box or freezer depending on season

You had yourself one of these filled with ice cold water during summer times. You don't know how good water can taste until you work out on a farm in the middle of an LA summer.
