I'm convinced that the amount of hair that grows on your body as you age is a direct representation of where your body wants to live.

Little hair, humid south.

And Gold Bond wasn't put on the market until 1908

Thousands of years and countless chappings later

When I went to the Citadel, the barracks weren't air conditioned. And we wore wool uniforms for a good chunk of the year.

1) They never had it so their bodies were more acclimated to heat.

2) The majority were not nearly as fat as the current population.

The average life expectancy in the 1800s was about 40.

A better question is how did people live in LSU dorms without AC into the 2000s?

I can hack it during the day but trying to sleep in a warm stuffy room with no noise except chirping mosquitoes would make me want to have tSuicides

I got to where I would crank the window unit down about 10 minutes before I’d shower, then just run into the bedroom when I got out.

You'd learn to deal with it pretty quick. I lived a summer without it and it wasn't that I was tougher, I just had a much broader range of what I was willing to call comfortable.

In Louisiana? Not even a window unit?

Climate change only started recently pushing temps in the south to 90+ degrees. My dad said he remembers most of the summers in South La in the 50's and 60's were 75 during the day and low 60's at night.

He also said Hurricanes didn't become dangerous until Katrina hit. Again climate change.

when i lived in france, we had a few weeks in august where the temp was in the high 90's. the worst part was not the heat, but the mosquitos coming in through the open windows. i slept with a wet bath towel on my back and it would be dry in the morning.

Also, they adjusted their work schedules. They were up and working much earlier than most of us and avoided the heat of the day.

Many of the old houses had fairly tall ceilings. This helps a lot as hot air rises to the ceiling which is further away. Also, the layout with respect to doors, windows, and hallways was often done to promote airflow through the house. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, people from several generations back were A LOT TOUGHER than people today.

Americans have been migrating South the past few decades. That would not be happening without the invention of A/C.
