Oil and the effective and efficient use of petroleum products like kerosene and gasoline. We had it large quantities and we figured out how to use it....along with coal.

How did America become a superpower?

The first part is vast, VAST natural resources. Wood, farmable land and minerals (copper, gold, iron, etc.) were found aplenty when the nation was young and growing. Although there were quite a few wars in the early years, we had long periods of relative peace after the Civil War. This peace allowed our growing country to create and build with little trouble until WW1.

While World War 1 never touched our shores, we did lose many American lives. It also gutted much of our primary manufacturing competitors in Europe. This not only meant we had less competition but in some instances our competition actually needed our goods just to get back on their feet so they could try to compete with us again.

Europe was still in somewhat of a recovery mode when World War 2 broke out. Once again the large bodies of water that separate us from the Eurasian continent kept war from our soil. Domestically we became a manufacturing haven for the world, churning out the tools of war at an awe-inspiring rate.

Meanwhile, World War 2 ravaged not just Europe but the burgeoning economies of the major Asian countries as well. The end of the war left the US as the sole manufacturing power in the modern world. Having such a leg up meant we were able to do more and better research and put out more and better goods than other countries for many, many years.

tl;dr - WW1, WW2 and fricktons of natural resources.

Largely a result of the Second World War. We were relatively unscathed compared to the other participants by the end, so our economy didn't need rebuilding, and we were the first to get the atomic bomb. It all followed from there.

The USA, searching for a way to tap into the hidden strengths that all humans have. Then an accidental overdose of gamma radiation interacts with his unique body chemistry. And now, when the USA grows angry or outraged, a startling metamorphosis occurs.

Right after the Civil War the USA had one of the largest, best equipped militaries in the world. We had a Navy with steam powered ironclad warships driven by screw propellers with rotatable breech loading cannons. US land forces were equipped with rapid fire lever action rifles, breech loading cannons, machine guns, artillery observation balloons and advanced field medical services. We would have badly defeated any European armed forces at that time.

About that time, Mexico decided to try and take back Texas.

Europe was a giant debris field. We had a monopoly on manufacturing.
