not always possible

most people living in suburbs don't have the luxury of working in the suburbs

same for rural areas

if you are one of those lucky people, then thats great, but you are an outlier

One is not better than the other. It's a matter of personal preference. I would go crazy living in the country. I like being able to walk, bicycle or drive less than 10 minutes to get to anything my heart desires.....good food and drink, live music, friends that live close, museums....yes I go every couple of months, grocery stores a 10 minute bicycle ride away (Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Sprouts and Fiesta), great exercise options....I'm about to ride my bike to Baylor's Tom Landry Center to swim. The only thing that sucks is when I have a meeting way out in the burbs. I do have a small yard but it's big enough. Not sure what I would do with a lot of property. Its not noisy...maybe I am used to it though. And traffic is not bad at all. Traffic is only an issue for people that don't live near all the conveniences. The country is a nice place to visit but would get boring for me.

That's a very rare situation in EBR. If you don't have a car in BR. You'll have a difficult time doing just about anything.

BR is caught in the gray zone of being a little city with some country aspects.

The only convenience I can see is being able to afford a big house on lots of land, but who the hell cares when there is nothing to do in that house or around it?

1. Walk around bare arse inside/outside anytime you want.
2. Play Big Chief with the lady
3. Shoot guns/bows anytime you want
4. Nurture a huge garden
5. Have a gigantic shop to park your man shite and have crab/crawfish boils
6. Ride ATV's
7. Hunt doves and snipe
8. Hunt squirrels
9. Have roman candle wars
10. Have dirt wars with your kids
11. Walk around bare arse
12. Owning your personal fishing pond
13. Dont have to worry about idiot neighbors
14. Dont have to worry about idiot neighbor's kids
15. Peace and Quiet
16. Music as loud as you want until whatever time of the night you want
17. Building an epic fort in the woods for your kids
18. Hunt Rabbits
19. Geese all over the place
20. Epic bonfires anytime you want
21. Not nearly as much traffic
22. Close to shithole bars with an easy drive home
23. Plenty of space to host a high school after party when your kids grow up
24. You can skin a deer anywhere you want and not give your neighbor a heart attack
25. Seclusion
26. Last place of refuge when the Zombie Apocalypse finally comes
27. Blow shite up
28. You become better at fixing your own shite because a trip to the store is not as convenient
29. Epic hide and seek games for your kids

And on and on and on....

Many burbs are simply smaller satellites of the city, smaller versions with office parks, restaurants and such.

I honestly don't think "city" in the context of this conversation when it comes to these two places. They are assuredly both cities by definition, but for the most part don't have the conveniences of living in a city.

You left out access to many activities such as live music, restaurants, museums, new people, etc. Access to lots of goods and services used to be a bigger deal before the Internet though I'm sure.

Dude, Driftwood is practically Austin these days.

I'm currently on 23 acres. I was roughly on 7,000 square feet in Bouldin Creek.

I know more is "pushing" out this way as Austin is running out of room, but it's still a different kind of lifestyle.

You can do that in a lot of major suburbs around the country. In Chicago, the suburbs have the global HQ of like 25 F500 companies (McDonald's, Abbott Labs, Kraft, ITW, Baxter, Navistar, CDW, Grainger, etc., etc.).

Seattle's traffic is horrific. Not sure why you're using Seattle as an example here.

I need to stop mixing the suburb/country when referring to BR.

It isn't country. But I can imagine for the older crowd that lives in BR it does have some small town aspects to it (Knowing everyone, going to some of the restaurants or shops that have been around before decades).

The thing that drops BR as a small city is the fact that our public transit is complete shite. But then again, that can be said about Louisiana in general.
