I love my neighbors and community. I don't want a life of isolation.

IMO a huge problem that we see today in society/politics is that people only know what they have in front of them. They haven't experienced other ways/walks of life

That's because many people either can't or refuse to take the risk to be in a new place with new people.

Also, what people consider "The city" needs to be heavily discussed.

I actually think there's more of a community feel out in the country than city

Also, everyone always throws out bars as some big draw. Do adults seriously go out to bars so much that it is actually some consideration in where to live?

I think when people have kids, their priorities change.

And when I speak of country I'm not talking Thib/Houma. I'm talking smaller

not in very rural areas

maybe in smaller towns, but when you get to where the neighbors are spaced out by 1/2 mile to a mile...everybody tends to just stick with family

the only time community comes together is for church on Sunday morning

Many suburbs are no different than living in the city

I should have clarified the difference between the city, suburbs and BFE.

Personally, I don't want a massive house in the middle of the country.

Nothing like living in the country where the nearest grocery store is 30 miles away. That fresh air though...

meh not really

We can include Alexandria as a "city" in this discussion and it still pertains to the same things as regards to pros and cons of city life

the extent is different, but the same pros and cons apply

Nah, maybe in the South but many rural areas are very community minded. They have all kinds of events to draw people together

but who the hell cares when you have to go to home to your cramped little spot of land in the middle of thousands of other cramped little spots of land?
What do you need so much space for? Why are you so scared of other people? What are you hiding?

Seriously how can you see the same faces everyday? I need to see new people and interact how else do you grow?

Absolutely.

Obviously I can only speak from my own experience, but having grown up in the country and lived in several cities, most of what city folks consider unique to city life exists in small towns.

Dollar General has actually starting filling this role and is killing it

obviously you aren't buying meat or veggies from Dollar General, but the days of it taking an hour to go get ketchup for most people are over

This reminds me of one of my parents friends who's son is getting married tomorrow. Apparently the mother is raising holy hell because the son doesn't want to live on the families property with his wife (He wants to move to NOLA). Also, this is the type of situation where the parents live in one house. The grandparents live to the left of them and the uncle lives to the right of them.

that's why i said mid-sized city with access to big cities

take LC. we have a lot of the amenities of a "big city" (and i mean things like multiple movie theaters, restaurants, etc)

houston is 2 hours away, BR 2, and Nola 3

while i wish i had more options locally, my 3 minute drive to work is worth the 2 hours to go to a museum or ball game a few times a year

*ETA: if you go way south, there are huge plots out in "the country", too

My next move is too a cabin or small house near a town of 3500 ppl. It's the most civic minded town I've ever seen
