Well one he won't mention is that no other country has such a diverse mix of cultures and races. Trying to compare other countries to the USA is always hard to do just based on this factor alone. A homogeneous nation isn't going to have the same clashes that the USA will have.

It becomes very arbitrary too and will be abused.
And weaponized in divorce/custody disputes, inheritance disputes, etc.

It’s just very difficult to draw the appropriate line and enforce it in a society that emphasizes liberty and personal freedom.

It is mental health, i think, but not in the way people think. People’s brains aren’t any worse than before, but I think we as a society have a lack of community as well as people lack a sense of purpose and pride. And, for people with legit brain malfunction, as said before, it’s hard to find and afford help.

This 100000000000%! I have an 18yo nephew who has paranoid schizophrenia. My sister has been getting him mental health for years; however, she can't get him committed because it would cost over $7,000 a week out of her pocket. No one can afford that. She's already spending $2.5K a month out of pocket for his meds.

He's a danger. They sleep with their door locked and bared and all the knives in the house locked up. He should be in an institute, not walking the streets.

The police are well aware of him, but they say they can't do anything until he does.

I know of 2 other people who have the same issues in their families. The system won't do anything, the insurance companies deny coverage, and the families can't afford the cost of the care.

We have made individual liberties more important than the safety of the community. It hasn't always been so.

School shootings prior to 2000Not near as many as we have now. Just perusing wiki for school shootings since the 50’s. Most incidents only had one casualty

And yet gun Restrictions have only gotten more draconian. Would appear access to guns is NOT the problem.

Game. Set. Match.

SO many opinions on a situation that no one has any real information about.
The shooter appears to have been in a shootout and car chase with the border patrol before crashing into the school and then shooting the innocents.

We don't know anything about the shooter's mental or criminal history or if he was known to the authorities for past behavior.

We don't know if the guns were legal, how they were procured, or even what specific types they are.

We don't know why he was in a gunfight with border patrol. Only that he is a US citizen and a local high school student.

Nothing worse than policy prescriptions based on emotional hot takes.

And no, gun control is not the answer. If you believe that is remotely possible, you are in a fantasy world.

If you like the rules in authoritarian nations, move to one.

I’ll attempt a serious answer.

1) Bring back insane asylums.
2) Prosecute family and/or close associates who failed to report obvious red flags.
3) Significantly enhance the gun purchase background check process.

We used to have 1-2 mass shootings a year up until the late 90s.

You're right, 25 years is a "lot" out of like 240 years this country has existed.

I don’t think anyone’s busting up in the school house with a musket circa the 1800s and killing 15 people

Do you really believe that or are you just obtuse?

So 1-2 a year. Thanks for making my point.

It used to be that people could be institutionalized for being fricking crazy. Not really the case anymore.

This. We need institutions to be brought back. We changed the laws in the 70's or 80's where it became much more difficult to commit people (ACLU bitched). And it didn't help that we closed most of our long-term institutions.

I think when someone makes a threat or acts strange (in a violent manner), they should get a 10 year commitment. The psychiatric board can periodically evaluate them for early release.

Yea this sounds like a solid idea and will absolutely have no way of dragging in innocent people.

How would you make it more strict without infringing on someone's rights? They already check you for felonies. Anything more than that and you might as well shite all over the whole "innocent until proven guilty" part that our rights are based on. What else would you have them check?

Stop mentioning the shooter's name in the media for starters. That won't happen though

If your kid is a fricking weirdo keep an eye on him. That would probably help reduce several of them where the shooter is living at home with mommy and daddy.
