It’s loosely scripted (according to a random thing I read, and the Andre the Giant special on HBO), but sometimes the winner vs loser isn’t determined til the match is happening. There’s a whole lot of communicating with the “ref” to see how they’re holding up.

Wraslin’s real baw!

But if it wasn’t, they would script it to have the fans continue to stay interested. You are asking the same question as if the actors in a sitcom get to choose who they will date/hook up with etc.

I'm guessing on how good the storyline is for a particular wrestler whether or not that wrestler gets the title.

The same way it's determined for the NBA.

In the most generic sense every wrestler is given a part to play. The ones who play their part well may get recognized by management and receive a push where they win most of their matches. From there storylines and gate projections largely determine who wins or loses.

For example if a face wrestler is super over he probably won't win a championship match for a while. He will lose to heal who cheats for a few months to build up sympathy and gate potential. At the biggest possible gate he may win.

Alternatively a heel wrestler may win matches and generate anticpation of when they finally lose.

It is far more art than science.

Depends on how they want to tell the story.

As far as becoming champ and perennial winning and losing, it depends on a lot of things...your attitude, working your arse off, in ring talent, ability to cut a promo, ability to work safely, merch sales, and how much the crowd loves/hates you or doesn't care about you.

Sleeping with and then marrying the owner's daughter helps out... ask Triple H

No. That's how you become an executive.

That part of the Andre special was almost certainly inaccurate. Hogan winning was the only logical (and profitable) conclusion to that storyline.

Also, changing the winner in the middle of a match is extremely rare, and usually only occurs in cases where one of the wrestlers is badly injured during the match.
