It seems like people on this board want New Orleans to fail.

The Port is a completely separate political entity from the city. It is a creature of the state. You guys incessantly bashing on the city of N.O. need to go find another straw man on this one.

There are a lot of people from Louisiana in Houston.

You think the owner of that ship and the company that owns the product bark at the cost of the local pilot? Which is less than 1% of the cost to get the ship there btw.
You can try to minimize it all you want, but they get paid half a million dollars a year and are legally allowed to pass on their jobs directly to family members. Those ridiculous figures are financed by everyone who does business in the state by paying increased prices for the goods that are served by the shipping industry.

nobody wants NO to fail. We are just tired of seeing it continue to do so. For that matter, we're tired of seeing our entire state fail. Equally as frustrating is the defensive response by natives like you. Most of us were "born here" and "lived here for years". We've witnessed the non-ending cycle of failures.
This state and your city have all the blessings and resources necessary to do better, but too often we make excuses for why we aren't. Quit being defensive and faulting those of us who want change for the better.
We aren't celebrating the bad things, we are trying to point them out in the hope of changing them.

Bingo, it's not as if they accept only the best and brightest.
It maybe a tough job but the union controls who can and who can not be a river pilot.

How does that compare to other states? Harbor piloting is a racket in most of the states I have lived.
IMO cargo ships want two things. The ability to offload at a lightning pace, and the ability to gain additional loads for the transit to the next stop.
Houston is far superior in both regards.

Containerized cargo is very sensitive to economic conditions compared to oil, chemicals and grain. In 2008-09 the east and west coast ports were crying due to the recession and the river kept chugging along.

I am sure Houston does very little chemical and oil

NOLA has never been a container port. It has always been historically strong in bulk and break bulk cargo, and still is.
Houston has a distinct advantage in the Houston Ship Channel. You can pull in right off of Galveston Bay. Of course, NOLA tried to do something similar - the MRGO. We know how that worked out. The amount of time saved on the MRGO, compared to straight up the river, wasn't worth it considering needing to navigate the lock.

Chiquita went back to Gulfport last year. We did not lose that to Houston.
MT-GO has been closed for a while.
On the bright side, PortNO is gaining Cruise Lines and passengers

Do you know what it actually takes to get a ship up and down the river?
I don't but I'll never get to find out either because my daddy, granddaddy, uncle, brother-in-law, etc weren't pilots.
I don't doubt that it takes a lot of practice and skill, I just object to their nepotistic selection methods. Make it hard to enter the field with plenty of schooling, certifications, etc sure but bloodlines shouldn't be a part of the equation.
