Wilmington, DE is the top banana port in the US.

Pretty sure I never heard Wilmington, DE mentioned in a Jimmy Buffett song. Not my first guess for the banana boat port.

I was figuring the Port of Alabama in Mobile was making strides. Didn't think they would out do Nola , but we shall see.

Shallow draft, abundance of refrigerated storage, close proximity to major NE populouses.

It's a shame New Orleans has dropped since the banana industry was so closely associated with the city. At one point in time 6 out of 7 bananas imported to the US went through New Orleans.

Many coups and Central American politics were decided in New Orleans.

New Orleans is a bulk petrochemical and agricultural port.

Yup, New Orleans has never been a high volume container port and never will be. Especially compared to the north east and California ports. You want to see something wild, look up the Maersk ships. The biggest carry something close to 120k containers and can only use a select few ports.

Huey Long purposely had engineers build the Old Bridge (190) so ocean going ships couldnt pass under it and all commerce had to come through S. LA.

This is also true, large container ships also don't go up the river. I think a lot of people don't realize that. The avondale shipping yard shutting down didn't help much for offloading either. even though it was primarily shipbuilding they still have a number of cranes now sitting empty

Largest right now are around 20-21k TEUs. But completely agree that it is insane how big they are.

It seems like people on this board want New Orleans to fail. Y'all seem to celebrate anything bad that happens there. Well, having been born there and spent many years there, I've got news. Without New Orleans, Louisiana is basically Mississippi with better food.

Dude. Taking down statues is way more important than reducing crime, fixing schools, cleaning out the PD of thugs and creating cash flow into the city. Get with the times.

I can't wait for the day we can have a normal discussion about New Orleans without the idiots chiming in about statues. We get it man, it's played out

Long Beach is also doing the same in the west coast.

LB's containerized port is incredible.

They went from basically being a relative nobody in the global shipping industry to now being one of the main west coast destinations.

Do all Houstonians have such a bad case of small dick syndrome that they have resort to bragging about port traffic on internet to feel good about their city?

Only problem is they would have had to shut down the railroad down for a long time to do that. Thats the only rail line across the river till Vicsburg I believe.

The old bridge in BR is a combined road and rail bridge IIRC.

Isn't the port something separate from the city as far as improvements and funding? Meaning the port makes its own money to pay for improvements?
