What NOLA should have done was when they redid the Huey P, make it higher and make Avondale Shipyard a container terminal. That would have been very smart investing for the future.

Only problem is they would have had to shut down the railroad down for a long time to do that. Thats the only rail line across the river till Vicsburg I believe.

Given that containerized cargo is a fairly infant industry, no port was really bread and butter for it. The amount of foresight and investment some ports had in the evolution of shipping allowed them to be better positioned as the shipping industry transitioned.

New Orleans, per usual for a Louisiana city, did nothing to invest and prepare for the transition, hence why they have fallen drastically.

Bingo. And it takes broad investment in both rail and road networks as well as the port itself.

Louisiana just doesn't invest in itself. The road and rail network in the region isn't going to get better by neglecting it.

Houston (and to a lesser extent, Mobile) made a conscious decision to persue that market. Long Beach is also doing the same in the west coast.

Houston has destroyed New Orleans Port traffic by FredsGotSlacks
If you fly into Houston over the gulf you'll see 30-40 boats stacked up outside of Galveston waiting to go in at all times.

If you track the ships up and down the river and at its mouth, you may see just as many ships. They are more spread out.

Container ships will prefer population hubs as the greater population will demand the imports in the containers. If a importer can sell a large percentage of its good right off the boat, it makes more money due to reduced land shipping costs.

It is economics or some vast Mitch conspiracy. You all give that Dick head too much credit to screw up NOLA shipping.

Wasnt the price of a new bridge and rail going to be around the same as just redoing the old bridge?

When I meant higher, I meant a whole new bridge. My apologies

Those aren't all container ships.

Port of south Louisiana (Baton Rouge to New Orleans) is still a bulk cargo leader and probably always will be.

Here are the statistics for 1st Quarter 2017:

Looks to be up 21% versus 1st Quarter 2016.

False. Louisiana's terrible state government has destroyed New Orleans Port traffic.

Btw, the port of South Louisiana is still the busiest port in the US I believe.

The numbers from them have always been counted separately, correct?

Usually Port of South Louisiana refers to the 60 mile stretch between the two cities.

Lately I have been reading a lot of reports that conflate the three ports. Combined, they have impressive stats that politicians and local economists like to pimp.

When they talk containers, it's primarily Port of New Orleans. Baton Rouge and SoLa are major bulk players.

There is (or was) a plan out there to create a massive container port at the mouth of the river. I don't think they were able to get much in the way of private funding.

Maybe someone that posts here is more familiar with that. Pretty sure it died on the vine.

Infrastructure is a big reason that EXXON passed on LA and went to TX. The tax credits were a bigger part but it for sure played a part
