For some reason, I thought lunch was universally free. It is in our district. Every kid gets breakfast and lunch for free. You only have to pay for extras like popsicles.

It’s free for everyone here, too, but we still get the data.

I don't really have a problem with this.

It's a fraud investigation. Happens with workers comp claims all the time too.

Back in the day you had to "qualify" for free anything. If you weren't on a list you didn't get it.

It was low income welfare types getting it.

Well, does she live in the district?

Not from what I can tell.

It appears to be the classic, "Yeah, I committed the infraction, but you have no right to actually hold me accountable for it."

The child was formerly in a gifted program but is now unable to participate. She now completes coursework online, away from student interaction for months.

“The transition has not been good,” Shipman said. “We battle depression. She’s just at a loss. Being at home and not being with friends has not been good for her.”

It wouldn’t disprove the school’s past claim, but if she didn’t move into rental within the district before filing this she is an idiot. That proof would allow her kid to re-enroll as long as it’s not fraudulent, but that would also be admitting the school was right in their actions.

If this “home” is in the district she isnt always without her friends from school. I get she isnt around them during the school day, but she can still see them and should.

What school district is she completing coursework for online? If a public school I would think that they have the same rules even if online.

quote:

Rice said Hoover City Schools are also in violation of federal protections for people who are housing insecure or are victims of domestic violence. He also said the school district is obligated to let students remain enrolled until a definite conclusion is reached.

If the attorney is talking about the client than how does someone who has a house in her name outside the district and supposedly a rental inside the district qualify as housing insecure. No details mentioned anywhere about any domestic violence until this, so if this what the client meets than I am sure there should be proof to submit.

It seems like a definite conclusion was reached by the district. I don’t think that has to include challenges by way of lawsuits.

I bet the rental ended in the fall, and they moved out to the out of district place while trying to use early fall utility bills as proof. The kid probably kept telling people she moved which lead to investigation. I can’t remember exactly, but it seems like most of the public schools we have been involved with had a date sometime in the spring and maybe even back to January or February where if parents moved out of the district the student could finish the year there if they chose to do that. If move happens in the fall then it was until Christmas break.

I’m almost positive too the school has brought up the concern before. I would find it very hard to believe they just all of a sudden were like “hey we think this student is lying about where they live, let’s follow them home”. Something would have happened to alert them to the issue and they probably were not able to get satisfactory proof they did live in the district.

Pretty sure it is racist to investigate fraud against blacks. Or at least that’s what they say.

Good. Schools need to be doing more of this. She can attend Bessemer City Schools where she’s zoned for. If she wants Hoover she can move to Hoover. This is not difficult.

Typical. They break the rules and get outraged and play victim when they get called on it. Last time I checked, you can follow a person and ask them to draw a map of where they live.

Lot of this going on in my area. At least one kid who was from outside the district caused a shite storm at a school in my area that got Chris Nakamoto involved.

So...she couldn't prove residency and now she's suing?

Makes no sense.

My dad was a shrimper so gone during the weekdays. My mom worked 8am (after dropping us off) to 6pm. After school, I went to my grandparents house, did homework, spent time with them, ate dinner when my mom would pick us up to go home.

Who's to say this couldn't have been the situation as well?

She rents a home in Hoover. That is pretty vague. Does she rent the home to renters or is she the one living there and paying rent to a landlord?

Is this domestic violence claim connected? Does she have a boyfriend that she and the daughter were living with at a rental but have moved away from to the home outside the district due to safety concerns? If so, should the district grant leniency? I don’t believe that would be required to grant a hardship exception but I guess that could be the case.

Or, is she the landlord but using that address to keep her kid enrolled in the district?

Article is too vague to make any conclusions.
