They used to do a pretty legit Christmas lights display.

When we went to visit grandparents in Hornbeck we could only get 2 channels on the TV and the everything on the screen was different shades of purple. Oh, and it was a black and white TV. The most exciting part of the visit was feeding the cows and listening on the party line.

It was a really nice place. State took over and a lot of the garden facilities went downhill. It had a big very clean lake.

We used to go all the time when I lived in Sulphur as a kid. I always thought it was a really nice place. I hate to hear it shut down.

Grew up fishing here with my dad. Probably been 2 dozen times. Got attacked by a Canada goose on the island with the big house on it. Caught my biggest bass ever in 2002 and still have the picture framed. We also had family reunions at the cabins you could rent and there's a HUGE petrified tree there as well.
Louisiana can frick up anything nice man I tell ya.

Were they not getting enough visitors to keep the place open or was this just a case of Louisiana screwing a good thing up?

The fishing was outstanding. One of my best days ever my friend caught a 7-14 and I caught a 6-6 largemouth. We caught another 25 or so between 2 and 4 pounds.
Spring time and flukes had just been invented. Pearl white.

We went on a family vacation there when I was about 10. Great memories. I haven't thought of that place in a long time.

Parents took us kids there when I was around 8 or 9. It looked like an unbelievable place when you walk in, then it didn’t take long to realize there isn’t shite to do for kids there. Nothing. The grounds were very pretty and rolling hills but there weren’t any bikes, balls, animals or anything there that would be enjoyed by kids. Place f’n sucked. That’s my memory.

Same here. We had a family reunion there back in maybe the late 90’s. I only remember that because my son was born in 1998 and he was a baby when we went. Rented out the lodge and cabins as well. I swear they had a golf course on site as well because we played one but not sure if it was part of the facility or not. We also fished and I remember my cousin caught a gigantor bass on a Zebco. I bet that fish was at least 8 pounds.

The golf course was across the highway. It wasn’t a part of the park when we were there.

Chuch youth group had regular events out there, either at the cabin or setting up tents on the "airstrip" back in the 1990's. I'd setup my little astronomy telescope on Flag Island but I still tried to put a quarter in the mounted binoculars there...

My family used to rent a couple of cabins and fish the lake every spring. It was one of my favorite things growing up.
I took my wife and my oldest right before they closed.
If I recall, one of the hurricanes caused lots of damage and it just never reopened.

I went as a kid in the early 70s. The tulips were in full bloom. I couldn’t believe that many flowers could be in one place. It was beautiful.

I went a lot of times with my Mamaw and great aunts back in the 70s. They were big flower people and loved it. It was absolutely gorgeous! In the 80s, went to a bunch of work meetings at Toro Hills. I think it went the way much of Louisiana has. There just wasn't enough to support it.

A friend of mine caught an 8lb bass in their lake , back in the 90's I believe.
A good friend worked there as their horticulturist back in the 70's and he would get permission for us to fish the lake which was absolutely full of bass.
