Genghis Khan, the ruler of the Mongol Empire had sought to open diplomatic and trade links with Ala ad-Din Muhammad, Shah of the neighbouring Khwarezmid empire (modern-day Iraq/Iran) in the 13th century. However, after the offer was rejected and a Mongol diplomat beheaded, Khan reacted furiously, sending in an estimated 200,000 warriors and utterly destroyed the empire.

Genghis Khan was not to be fricked with.

Also would like to add Pompei to the list as honorable mention

Pearl harbor literally resulted in thousands of people turning to dust after seeing a flash of light.

Honorable mention: Hitler breaking the non-aggression pact with Russia.

I don't think anything beats Pear Harbor but I always get a chuckle out of the Compiegne Wagon which Hitler put back in the exact spot where the Treaty of Versailles was originally signed in 1918 only to make the French sign a letter of surrender in 1940.

Gen Custer

History tells us that Custer should have waited for reinforcements, but his tactics at LBH were customary for the time. The Indians never stood and fought a pitched battle against the US Army if they could help it. They always formed a skirmish line just long enough for the women and children to scatter. Experience taught that the only way to beat them was to catch them completely by surprise. Find them and attack immediately. This time the Sioux and their allies threw out the playbook.

the British advance was a gross misadventure poorly managed and outfitted which had more to do with the outcome than anything Jackson did

I'd say Custer's last stand was the biggest FAFO scenario, until Pearl Harbor happened.

Underrated one that hasn't been mentioned is Napoleon attempting to invade Russia.

He went from basically in control of continental Europe to suffering a catastrophic defeat and exiled (twice, last one permanent) within 2 years.

Lesson being, don't try to invade Russia. Hitler didn't learn that lesson.

The (second) Defenestration of Prague.

Started with some officials being thrown out a window.

Ended with Europe's bloodiest war before prior to the modern ones with over a million dead
