I heard a story the other day about a woman in Maui that went on a short hike in the local forest and ended up getting lost for 2 weeks.

idk how it happens-I've been on countless trails and while I have gotten a little turned around a few times, I have never gotten close to the point where I felt like I couldn't find my way back.

but it happens plenty.

Must not have walked too far. Larger area is surrounded by roads. And yes, if he would have followed a drainage he would have come out on California #1 and then the coast. Prolly scared shatless.

Why wouldn't you bring a phone on a 3 hour hike? You can leave it off if you want privacy. A single charged phone and he spends a couple extra hours out there instead of 10 days

I got myself off a trail in Yosemite and started to panic as it was getting dark and my boots were wet from spring snowmelt. That panic made me lose my reasoning for a moment, then I remembered that there was a road at the bottom of the mountain and all I needed to do was walk downhill until I hit the road.

None of us would look great after 10 days in the wilderness with no food.

Rattlesnake canyon Hiking Incident 1999

This is an infamous story where some friends went for a hike (another that was just supposed to be 3 hours) and got lost immediately. They did have food and water with them but didn’t use it wisely. They also had a map they didn’t know how to read.

Long story short, one killed his friend who was panicking on the night of the third day by stabbing him through the chest with a knife.

The rangers discovered them on the morning of the 4th day.

Turns out they were only 20 minute from the parking lot. The guy who killed his friend went to prison for two years for this.
