High Energy Costs Threaten Climate Goals, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm Warns

Price jumps could spur backlash to green-energy transition, she says

quote:

High fossil-fuel prices could threaten the green-energy transition, sparking backlash to long-term climate goals, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm warned on Wednesday.

Regulators in recent months have begun fleshing out policies intended to transform entire industries by boosting electric vehicles, hydrogen production and more. At the same time, U.S. officials have called on oil-and-gas producers to increase their drilling activity in a bid to slow inflation through lower prices at the pump and smaller utility bills.

The balancing act lies near the heart of President Biden’s attempt to reshape the U.S. economy through a climate-and-spending bill that aims to make cleaner energy more abundant for businesses and cheaper for consumers.

“It’s really nonbinary,” Ms. Granholm said Wednesday. “You really have to do both to ensure that there’s not a backlash on the clean side.”

The dual goals came under pressure last year, after the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine whipsawed commodity markets. Western companies and governments’ rapid-fire turn away from Russian oil and gas set off a global scramble for supplies that sent prices skyrocketing and fueled overall inflation.

quote:

Speaking at Columbia University in New York, Ms. Granholm described such moves as temporary setbacks within an energy transition that the Biden administration hopes to accelerate through a mix of subsidies for green-energy producers and regulations for major polluters.

“We had a hiccup last year, clearly, because people had to turn the lights on,” she said
.

quote:

While “oil and gas is going to be around for a while,” Ms. Granholm said, weaning the U.S. economy off such fuels will depend in part on lowering the cost of wind, solar and battery storage technologies.

“People still have to be persuaded that the cost of clean is cheaper,” she said. “They have to see that in real terms.”

The only way to do this is through governmental regulation, subsidies, and market manipulation.

Those pesky common folk and their electricity. If only there was some way we could send them back to the dark ages! for their own good of course.

Yep, which is why this quote stood out for me more than anything else in the article:

Or flat out lie, and when you are paying much more after the switch (like Obamacare), it’s: whoopsies.. well, we already switched so it’s too late to switch back!

Which is why they want to ban natural gas appliances while pushing electric cars. Can't have those peasants able to travel and cook their dinner when the government shuts down the grid.

Climate goals. How can you have climate goals with no goal. Can I get the CO2 concentration to global temperature relationship chart, please? At exactly what concentration of CO2 and CH4 in the atmopshere relates to what exact global temperature? If this is settled science, it should be as easy as telling me at what temperature and pressure water boils. I need a ton per degree F table as well. It can be Metric tonnes and celsius, that's fine...I can do math. I just need to know what the fricking goal is to stop this Extinct Level crisis.

Speeking of extinction of everything on the planet, I need to know at what fricking temperature and/or GHG concentration we all go extinct. This is, afterall, an "exitential crisis". Or so they tell us.

Here is what I think. Its about an infinite amount more CO2 emissions then they are predicting. Why, because CO2 has an inverse log relationship to atmospheric heating. Its like them worrying you by saying 1000 blankets will make you exponentially warmer than 10. Which you know, after about 4 blankets you aren't getting any warmer (inverese log, the more add, the less effect it has). In fact, CO2 would probably have to be so high as to sufficate you. Shut the frick up and plant a damn tree if you are concerned. Then go drive your SUV because we aren't killing shite with CO2. If the temperature was increased 4 degrees globally (celsius) by man made CO2, I predict an INCREASE in biodiversity and less diesease and less famine. I also predict a greening of the forests and planet.

In 100 years, guess who will be right. Too bad I won't be around to bump this and do the John Cena You Can't See Me in all these dumb fricking grifters' faces.

I was in discussion with an engineer friend on the use of tankless water heaters. I’ve always thought this was a 100% gas unit where burners heat the tubing to output hot water on demand.

Nope, they also sell all electric tankless heaters that could utilize 3 60A breakers to draw 150A total. That’s a massive instantaneous load for a house.

All electric models range from 12kW up to 36kW (my example above).

It's always rules for thee but not for me with the political royalty.

There are some surprising parallels with the beginnings of the French Revolution going on. Vastly different, for sure,( even our poor are wealthier than many) but you can see similar patterns in the attitudes.

One thing we learned in statistical process control training: goals/targets are meaningless and even harmful if they are not based on continuous improvement supported by data.
Continuous improvement can only be achieved through system improvements.
For instance, in the case of EVs, new battery technology or an entirely new source of energy.
Until this happens, climate goals are bullshite.
And the truth is climate control is far beyond what can reasonably be achieved over the next hundred years.

No you don't, you just need to stick with fossil fuels and get out of the way. The green energy is based on fairy tales and not needed. It is only for control and power that they want to go all electric. It's dumb.
