The new format is difficult to scroll in light mode. I’m having a harder time distinguishing between adjacent comments as the line delineating between comments is not as prevalent as it was before.
At least that’s how I’m seeing it on mobile.

Is there an issue with having "new" for topics and posts because the big blue period is not doing it for me.

Whatever, nerd. I don't care enough about this. All I know is the apple bros have been crying for a TD dark mode for years. I have a Samsung phone (I'm sure you know all the particulars) for years, and have pretty much always had dark mode on TD.
