I remember at this point with Francine they had it hitting Texas. We got a long way to go with this one.

Florida is certainly looking most likely this morning. Still some potential it misses the east kick and finds a weakness into Louisiana. That scenario is more of a tail risk, but a launching point farther south and west of models leaves that scenario open.
Certainly, this is a tricky forecast with an upper low breaking off of the front. Placement of that upper low will go a long way toward determining how strong a potential system can get.

Is Florida Gators going to cancel their season for Napier now considering their murderous schedule?

That has gotten pretty consistent, too. As far as it happening goes.

what are the potential consequences of that low happening or not?

Hurricane stress is the last thing she needs right now.
I wonder even if a hurricane hit if the AirBnB would mind if I rolled up with a 6000w generator and 4" gallons of gas

Rds can answer it better, but depending on timing of the storm moving north in the Gulf and the strength, timing, and placement of that low resulting from the trough, it could mean better outflow for the storm which would give it a better environment to strengthen. There are a lot of variables in that setup though.
I also think it could play a tricky role in what happens immediately following landfall.

I like James Spann
Those of us in Birmingham TV market have been very fortunate to have him here all these years. He’s the best “local” broadcast meteorologist in the country.

And with regard to educating and communicating tornado risk and outbreaks Im not sure anyone else is close.
They should just record him and use him as the model for on screen meteorologists.

Nope, but all the others have heard of James, and even they look to James as a leader in the field. I've personally watched a bunch of storm coverage from around the country over the years, and the only ones who really compare are the OKC mets. They have some advantages that James doesn't, though, flat land and helicopters being the two big ones.

The Florida Gator jokes are getting kinda old IMO

Last time I was out of town, Francine made landfall and we had to reroute through Jackson to get home.
This time, we have a weekend in Huntsville (music fest) under the gun.
I’m tired of traveling. My last two months have been nothing but work and on the road.

No, but I bet they’ve all heard James Spann. I would bet he has a bigger following than any other “local” meteorologist in this country, and there is a reason for that.

Ok cool. I’m glad you have such a good one.

Just replying to your profile picture and off topic, but nice vintage Pfluegers in that picture. Have a few of those myself and they are workhorses!

Panama City Beach won’t like this GFS at all.
Posted on 9/22/24 at 11:09 am to rds dc
12z GFS shows nearly perfect conditions for strengthening over the Gulf. The upper-level cutoff low is ideally located for ventilation of the system. However, this run may organize the system too quickly. A less organized system won't be able to take off as fast in the Gulf.
ETA: The 12z ICON and Canadian look much more realistic for this kind of setup.
