Back on 2010 or 2011 I sat through a lecture on how warming oceans would impact hurricanes. Their conclusion was that the number of hurricanes would actually decrease but the average intensity would increase. Not that this season has had any strong storms but this season reminded me of that lecture

The earliest Cat. 5 on record in the Atlantic Basin would be notable to that hypothesis.
