Does this company mail out the tax form that shows you are legally covered in a qualified tax plan?

It's technically not insurance, but a legally accepted substitute. One of the exemptions from the individual mandate is enrollment in a sharing ministry.

MrLSU are you an individual grandfathered health plan??

Ours went up but it's less than $1k .. we're grandfathered in. There are some "benefits" we don't get but when I asked the rep what disadvantages would be of NOT being grandfathered she told me the price would be more.

I am self employed & agree that the self employed middle class are being forced to take it in the arse on this.

Check out Medi-Share. The four of us that are healthy moved to it this January. $193/mo. with a $10,000 deductible.

My daughter that reacquires lots of medical attention and therapy, etc. has her own policy. She is 9 yrs old. $1,800 deductible, $385/mo. and 100% paid after deductible.

If all of us were on a high deductible plan $10k+ the premium was going to be $1,800 per month. Way more than my mortgage ($1,100/mo.). I said enough. There is something fundamentally wrong when health insurance premiums are more than mortgages.

In the current shitshow of a political/insurance/healthcare environment, I take our situation as a 1 year reevaluation. I am willing to roll the dice for 1 year at a time because there are no pre-existing conditions anymore. If something goes wrong for us and Medi-Share doesn't hold up its end, can get back on traditional insurance plan the following January.

My friend in Canada blew out his knee and had to wait SIX MONTHS for an MRI.

He probably didn't have insurance. The dirty little secret is that in countries with "universal" healthcare people end up buying health insurance on top of their "free" converage. Because the free coverage sucks. A friend of mine in England had the same deal, he wrecked his knee skiing and would have been in crutches for months. But he had the sense to have health insurance so he actually got good treatment. His insurance is not cheap.

Basically from all i've read is that without your employer providing insurance you are screwed. Are most people quitting their jobs to strictly find an employer that provides a healthcare plan?

I also really think that the amount everyone pays in taxes doesn't need to change to make this happen.

Why is it that every state that attempted to or looked at doing it realized that it wasn't economically feesible?

Hell, California alone estimated a $400 billion a year price tag. That is over twice their yearly general fund.

The cost for the entire USA would be astronomical.

You want universal healthcare? Change the health culture of the USA.

Where we are currently, the citizens of this country do not deserve universal coverage.

We are the least healthy, laziest, most disgusting society on the planet.

Universal healthcare will not fix that. It will only bankrupt us.

Why blame the insurance companies or the government? The real problem with the cost of health insurance is the cost of healthcare in this country. It’s ridiculous and out of control. At some point the majority will not be able to afford insurance for healthcare and will not be able to pay cash for it either. The industry will collapse in on itself. That will be a good thing.

Adding: when I go to an urgent care center, (which really doesn’t handle urgent care) for a cold and am told to buy certain over the counter meds then Insurance is charged in excess of $400 for the visit, this is a problem, a big one. I didn’t see a doctor either, saw an NP. Out of control.

You do know that they don't receive $400, right?

The reason the overshoot is there is because the insurance companies undershoot everything.

No one gets $400 for an urgent care visit.

Scruffy you are the professional in this part of the world, but isn't the last place you want to go for medical assistance is urgent care?

Those places are a racket no?

For actual emergent care, avoid them at all cost.

They are merely there to make money off of those who have a cold and don't want to wait for an appt with their doctor.

Seen kids prescribed everything from antibiotic, to acyclovir, to albuterol and beyond for common colds.

They are largely rackets.

People like them for two reasons:

1. They are fast.

2. They will give you a prescription because everyone who goes to the doctor thinks they need a medicine to fix something that 99% of the time doesn't need a medicine.

That is the other biggest issue that this country has with medical care. The ignorance results in everyone believing that there is a "quick" fix for everything and that they have to make zero lifestyle changes.

My company just sent out updated premiums for 2018.

They are up 65%: from $1256 total per month to $2100 per month.

Am I missing something here? How much do some of you make a year to have these outrageous insurance costs?

I'm not saying you deserve or anything like that, but $3100/month? That's over half of my family's income after taxes.

$2000/month would destroy us.
