I've done harder things than that, and more times I've cared to, but I did because thst was the only way..
I'm not doing that, but I dont judge anyone that does it his way.

Coming up on a year since I had to put down the dog I got shortly after graduating college. With me through multiple moves/states, marriage, and lots of growth. It is hard, but you know better than anyone when it is time. I got to spend a week with her after I knew it was time (she wasn't suffering) and I feel so lucky that I got that time with her. Even nine months later, I still get the feels about losing her (particularly when reading posts like this). I keep her ashes by the desk in my home office and will bury her when we get into a more permanent home.
Thoughts are with you and I'll give my other dog a couple extra belly rubs in memory of your friend.

Just had to put down my 13 year old pup a couple of weeks ago. She had been on heart meds for about a year, but in otherwise good health.
She went downhill so fast in the span of about 3 days at the end. The hardest part was the day that we actually put her down. We went in for a vet appointment in the morning after a really bad night where we thought she would pass and had accepted we would be putting her down. She put on a show of strength at that appointment to where both the vet and myself were convinced we should allow a day or 2 of increased meds to see if they made things better, but as soon as I got back home, things went south again and we ended up right back at the vet in the afternoon.
That at least gave me some comfort to know that it truly was her time and we were making the right decision.

I’m so sorry. When we put our Boxer down, we decided we probably weren’t going to get another one. Then COVID…I saw my dog on a shelter’s Facebook page and knew he was mine. Our office closed, so we figured acclimating a new dog while we worked from home made sense. It really helped with healing the loss of the Boxer; if you’re empty nesters, it can help to have something to nurture. If so, you’ll know when the timing’s right.

Our 16 yo chi died last year. He had become almost completely deaf and blind. The morning of his death he was extremely confused. Wandering around back yard. He had a path that he stuck to exclusively and he was just rambling around lost in the yard, he stumbled over the door step and had a hard time finding his food and water bowl. I mentioned to my wife that something was off and that we needed to be really careful with him letting him out by the pool. Sure enough on the same damn day, , I was busy in and out of the house doing some grilling and he went out with me. I came back in and was messing around in the kitchen, looked over to his bed and he wasnt in it then I remembered he had followed me out. Sure enough, he had drowned. I had thrown him in the pool many times to make sure he could make it to the ledge and step out, he never had a problem. Something was up with him, and he had become a complete recluse, rarely even wanting to be petted and refused treats and such. So maybe it was time, maybe it was Gods way of not making us make the decision in the next months or so....but damn, that was tough.

I started looking immediately. Goldens only live nine or ten years. Ours fourth is four now.

Sorry man. I know it's tough. Just try and remember all of the great times and memories he brought to you and your family.

Man, we really, really don’t deserve dogs but I am always grateful we are allowed, by their creator, tp have them. I dread the day I have to say goodby to my little guys.

It's painful. Had a cat of 19 years, was really hoping he'd make 20. He had a massive stroke at night, got him to all night vet and had to let him go. Digging a grave in solid clay aint no joke, even one cat sized. That guy was my kid, he moved with me to three states, went through the end of my military, then college etc. Still miss him and it's been 4 years.

I buried an over 7 pets in my lifetime. My closest buddy was Bruno, an 85 pound Black Lab/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. It was a large hole at a friend’s farm in a nice somewhat shady spot near a hill.
Sorry for your loss buddy!

I thought this was about a human being who had died, based on the way you titled the thread.

Cat had oral cancer in 2021. I was the only one in my family that actually cared about it as it was an outside cat. Outside like 98% of the time. I got her nothing but tuna cans the last month before put her down. Her tumor was so big in her mouth golf ball sized, she would drool blood, but still managed to eat 4 cans a night of tuna. Vet wanted to put her in a trash bag to take home. I was furious, at least a cardboard box. Buried her in the center of the backyard. The car ride taking her to the vet was worse because she was clueless, and I felt I was contributing to killing her.
I knew she wouldn't survive a long time, but what if she could still live comfortably another 6 months. That kind of deal.
