There is great honor in a compassionate and merciful death. Such an end should be viewed as coming from a place of Love and understanding for the one who is suffering.

This is essentially how I frame it for my end-of-life patients and their families. Dogs are family too, in very unique ways that often times transcend those of our human counterparts.

You can certainly have a conversation with your veterinarian about palliative medications as well if you do not feel it is time to euthanize yet.

Putting your dog down almost makes it all not worth it

I'm struggling with that right now after saying goodbye to mine last year. Before this, I had med folks who had exactly one dog, and at the time it seemed crazy they didn't that they didn't get more. My current perception is very different.

You know what to do, gotta man up and do it for your dog. He has suffered long enough.

I did it over Thanksgiving, it isn't so hard the day of, after you accept it - at least it wasn't for me. Kind of came out of nowhere and the 1st night i realized it was time was the toughest.

Sorry to hear that. My parents put down our family dog of 15 years a week ago. An Australian Shepherd, amazing dog. It’s so damn hard, he had a good last day. We gave him some pepperonis he likes and a little ice cream. He just was physically hard to get up and walk, would be slipping on the floor and they didn’t want him to wake up in pain. Losing control of his bowels as well. He was very loved. So damn hard but have to remember that it’s for the best and he had a good life.

Thanks man. She passed over night so didn’t make it to the appointment. We woke up and knew it was time. Woke the kids up so she passed with all the family. Thankful for the holiday today

If you need assistance, I’m sure any of us can come pick him up since don’t have an attachment to him.

Also take the dog home and bury the corpse with dignity. It’s what should be done. Honor the life given after it is gone.

OP needs to update the thread. How did it go? Which service did you use - the one where they come to your house?

When you know, you know.

My lab was 13 when I put him down a few years ago. I thought it was his time to go when he was 12. He was really struggling to get around, so I had pretty much made my mind up to make the scheduling call the next day. Next day rolls around and I let him out in the morning to go pee and poop. 30 minutes later I go out to call him back in and he’d dug a hole and escaped. He was never a digger, so I’m convinced he knew. He spruced up and made it another year.

Your dog sounds just like mine when I finally made the decision. I miss him, but there was never a second of regret when it was done.

Bring him out back and put the old .22lr to use. He’d rather you take him out than some stranger I’m sure.

It sucks now, but it isn't going to get any easier. It is past time and waiting longer does more damage to him and you guys than good..

Think of the dog, not yourself.

Have the vet come to your home, if possible. If not, schedule the very last appointment of the day.

Take his favorite bed/blanket/toy with you.

Do not leave his side.
