Have you ever heard of painting your porch ceiling light blue to keep bugs away?
Posted by Tigeralum2008 on 4/28/16 at 10:21 am13
Had a friend complain about moths covering her porch ceiling. Someone suggested painting the ceiling light blue as it "keeps wasps and other bugs away"
The theory is the bugs think there is sky above them and no real shelter.
I'm seriously skeptical but thought I'd ask anyways
Has anyone tried this?
Sherwin Williams article on it

pretty much every house in nola has the porch ceiling painted light blue. i just got done painting mine at my house in mandeville the other day. I dont think it really works, as i still have wasp nests built in the corners from time to time, but i think it looks much nicer than just a white ceiling.

I'm not native to the South and gotta admit I never really noticed until it was mentioned today.

Yep, I think it also keeps birds from making nests, too.

I don't know about bugs, I always heard it was to keep the spooks and evil spirits away.

I painted my carport ceiling blue two years ago to see if it would help with stopping dirt dauber nests, and it has been 100% nest free since then. It doesn't stop all bugs. Not sure about moths. Still have some bugs, but I've only noticed very small bugs and small spiders.
Most paint stores have a specific color for this application, but I didn't use it bc it is not as blue as the sky, which is the color needed. Their color is a bit greenish to me.

The blue color has something to do with people back in the day believing ghosts wouldn't enter the home. The thought was that ghosts couldnt travel through water, so if they saw a blue porch floor and ceiling, they would be tricked into not entering the house.
