Also goes by Ghost Blue.

My porch doesn't have bugs or spirits on it. Maybe I need to paint the rest of my house blue.

yes, it keeps mud dobbers from building nests too. Go look at old plantation homes, they had this figured out over a hundred years ago.

I'd much rather keep the bugs away than the ghosts.

Anyone know if it affects spiders. They're my biggest nuisance.

Its about wasps/dobbers building nests on it. They confuse it with the sky. That's what I've always been told.

And its incredibly common and I think looks very good. I'm definitely doing it on the porch of our new home when we move in. My dad has it and claims it works.

Not sure what this is, but pretty rare in NOLA and south LA.

wtf

Its insanely common across the South and I've never seen it more than New Orleans. Just walk down a street and look at porch ceilings if you're not in the hood. Been done for hundreds of years to keep bugs from nesting on the ceilings.

Also called "Haint" blue, as others said, it's supposed to prevent hauntings.

The ceiling and wall in my carport are painted a greyish blue color. Wasps try to fly up through the ceiling when they get under there. They'll make multiple attempts knocking themselves into the ceiling before getting out. My color doesn't seem to have any affect when it comes to mud daubers and spiders.

I did this with my new house, purely by accident since I hadn't heard about the supposed bug protection. The painter and a few others told me after it was done. It looks good. And despite living in a very buggy location there are few bugs. So there might be something to it.

Doesn't work in St. Francisville - I painted the whole porch and the wrought iron - still have ghosts.

the answer as to why that used to work for bugs was in that article you posted.

quote:

When blue paints were first used on ceilings, they were usually milk paints, and those paints often had lye mixed into the composition. Lye is a known insect repellent, which would explain why insects would avoid nesting on a painted porch ceiling or ledge. As milk paint has a tendency to fade over time, giving it a rustic look, people would usually need to repaint their home every year or few years, covering the existing coat with a new coat of paint, and fresh lye.
