My kids, however, would occasionally resort to my name if they said “Mom” a handful times and I didn’t respond. We’d laugh about it afterwards.

They did it once when an OTer was at my house (true story) and I thought they would never recover.

I called my mom by her name once in my college years. Since I was to old to spank she refused to talk to me for 3 months.

If your mother cut communications off with you because you called her by her first name, she's a terrible parent. That is far and away more disrespectful than using a first name.

I have a 3 year old daughter with Autism and emerging language skills. She calls me by my first name about 75% of the time. If calling me "dip shite" meant she could communicate with me better, I'd be all for it.

As a joke or impersonation of a friend/family who should call them by name.

Example. Belting out my moms name in the voice of my Uncle whose accent is Troy from Swamp People thick (but he’s an a-hole).

Only in those situations or THICK with sarcasm.

My son (13) calls me “father”. Too damned proper for us. I think he’s just messing with me.

I never did. A friend's mom and dad insisted that she call them by their first names. She turned out well, but her parents were some odd ducks.

My Mom and Dad are both deceased but hell no. I had too much respect for them. One of my nephews does it occasionally and his older brother does it all the time. Can't stand it.

I always at least TRY to do that, but if it doesn't work then I do what I gotta do.

Never as a kid, but as an adult, I go back and forth between mom and a nickname based on her shortened first name, and between dad and “old man”

I used to call my mom by her name when she was listening and I really wanted her to listen to me.

Did it when I was younger as a dare when we were out with a large group of people. He refused to acknowledge me, and even started speaking over my head asking other people if they've seen his son around, until I called him dad.

nope.

I don't even call my father-in-law by his first name without puttin a "Mr." in front of it. I can't bring myself to do it.

This was me for about a decade until there was a sit down conversation telling me it was OK.
